a few days after you passed,
i came back to our house and i couldn’t find my slippers.
i realized then that i couldn’t ask you where they were. in the fridge, you left a teabag steeping in a mug with your name on it. there’s a receipt on your dressing table - you had requested for a document a week prior. did you know your bougainvillea finally started flowering? you told me you wanted to replace it because it was being stubborn.
i ended up using one of your fitted sheets to cover myself one night (because i’d forgotten where you said the blankets were.) i can hear you laughing had you known. i wish i could tell you about it. also about how, when i visited you on your birthday and we were saying goodbye to each other, i kissed you on the cheek for once and not the other way around. i think about it a lot.
a few days after you passed, i was told that sentimentality is expensive. in a stack of papers they wanted to throw away, i found the gift tag from my last christmas present to you. did you know? i kept the gift tag from your gift to me, too.
you once said i take after my dad, who cries easily. it’s true, your grandson also cries easily. and a lot. especially these days. especially when i finally found my slippers, stacked beneath your own.
