New to centre: Perfect Stranger, Townsville.
Today’s retail experience goes far beyond the shopfront.
The change room has become part of the experience too. It’s where customers make decisions, take mirror selfies, film TikToks, send photos to friends and imagine the outfit in real life.
This new Perfect Stranger store leans into that shift beautifully, with oversized fitting rooms, luxe full-height curtains, soft lighting and a calming neutral palette that makes the entire space feel elevated and effortless.
The clean materiality and minimal detailing allow the product to shine, while the generous layout creates a boutique feel that encourages customers to slow down and spend time in the space.
A great example of how thoughtful retail design now extends well beyond the sales floor.

Why material choices matter.
Every material tells a story. From texture and colour to finish and durability, each decision shapes how a space feels the moment a customer walks in.
In retail fitouts, materials are not just decorative. They are strategic.
✔️ Setting the tone of the brand
✔️ Influencing how customers move and interact
✔️ Enhancing comfort through acoustics and lighting reflection
✔️ Creating a lasting impression
The right material palette does more than look good. It creates an experience people remember.

Reasons Why You Need a Graphic Designer Versus a Signage Contractor.
#2 Designers think about how a sign is experienced within a real space
A common challenge in retail projects is the assumption that signage is simply about placing a logo on a wall.
Tenants will sometimes engage a signage contractor directly, assuming the contractor can “design” the signage by dropping a logo into a standard layout or working from clip art-style assets. While this may technically result in a sign, it rarely results in good signage.
Signage contractors are experts at putting things together. Graphic designers are trained to think about how things should come together.
✔️ Thoughtful proportion, scale and placement
✔️ Clear hierarchy and legibility
✔️ Alignment with brand and architecture
✔️ Designed for how customers move through the space
Without design thinking, signage can feel generic and disconnected.
With it, signage becomes part of the experience and elevates the entire tenancy.

Before and after: giving an existing tenancy a fresh new future.
At St Claire Shopping Centre, this former chicken shop was transformed for a new tenant by making smart use of what was already there.
With the bulkhead unable to be removed, the design needed to work with an existing constraint rather than against it. By utilising elements of the existing fitout, the project achieved a practical and effective transformation while giving the space a completely refreshed feel.
Great retail design is not always about starting from scratch.
Sometimes it is about seeing the potential in what already exists and finding the best way forward.

Retail is changing and it is not just about what people buy anymore. It is about how they feel when they arrive.
This feature article in online Shopping Centre News Magazine explores the key forces transforming Australian retail.
From wellness precincts and social spaces to outward-facing place-led design and open-air dining, shopping centres are evolving into lifestyle destinations that prioritise:
✔️ Experience over transaction ✔️ Community over convenience ✔️ Place-led design over generic malls
The most successful centres are no longer inward-looking boxes. They are outward, connected and alive from the street.
At Citrus ID, this is exactly where retail design is heading.

Creating effective wayfinding is about much more than placing signs. At Citrus ID, we follow a clear process to ensure navigation systems work seamlessly for both centres and customers.
1. Understand the customer journey
We start by analysing how people arrive, enter and move through the centre.
2. Review traffic flow
Key circulation paths, entrances, escalators, lifts and high-traffic areas are mapped to understand natural movement patterns.
3. Identify decision points
We pinpoint the locations where visitors are most likely to pause or need directional guidance.
4. Establish visual cues
Architecture, lighting, materials and spatial landmarks are considered to help guide people intuitively through the environment.
5. Design the signage system
Directories, directional signage and destination markers are designed to be clear, consistent and easy to understand.
6. Test for clarity
The system is reviewed to ensure first-time visitors can navigate the space easily and confidently.
When signage and wayfinding are designed well, people rarely notice it. They simply move through space without thinking about it.

“Design is the silent ambassador of your brand.” – Paul Rand
At Citrus ID, we see this play out every day in retail environments. The materials you choose, the flow of the space, the lighting, signage and shopfront all communicate something about your brand before a single word is spoken.
Great retail design does more than look good. It tells your story, shapes customer experience and leaves a lasting impression.
When design is done well, it quietly works in the background, guiding, welcoming and connecting people to your brand.
That’s the power of thoughtful retail design.
