FREE YIDDISH EVENT
SUNDAY 2PM AT SOCAL ARBETER RING/ WORKERS CIRCLE @circlesocal
Ruth Judkowitz (socal WC’s benevolent chairmentsh) will give a lecture discussing her research on CHAIM SCHWARTZ — A politically active communist poet from Belarus who migrated to the
US in the 20s and became a central figure in LAs Jewish literary & political circles.
We will then perform a set of Yiddish songs written by various Jewish composers who set Schwartz’s poems to music in the first half of the 20th century.
There are no known recordings of these songs and it’s likely they haven’t been performed in over 50 years!
RSVPs via email to [email protected] are appreciated 🫶🏼
Again the event is FREE but we will also gladly accept donations to help repair the Workers Circle’s roof which was damaged during last weeks storms.
Join us on Sunday, December 21st at 2pm for a free community celebration of Khanike with special guests the Klezmer Juice Orchestra!
This event is about celebrating community, making new friends, celebrating music old and new, and rounding out another year with the SoCal Arbeter Ring!
Donations welcome. RSVP to: [email protected].
Thanks to @aaron.castillo.white for the flyer.

Join us this year for the annual Night of the Murdered Poets, commemorating the Yiddish-speaking writers, artists, and activists executed at the height of the Stalinist purges.
This year, we're commemorating the poet and activist, Itzik Feffer.
Itzik Feffer (1900–1952) was a Soviet Yiddish poet, playwright, and public intellectual whose work blended revolutionary fervor with deep roots in Jewish cultural tradition. Born in Shpola (present-day Ukraine), Feffer rose to prominence in the early Soviet Union as a leading figure in the Yiddish literary world, using his poetry to celebrate proletarian ideals while preserving the rhythms and imagery of Jewish life.
Feffer was also a vocal participant in anti-fascist efforts during World War II, traveling abroad as part of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. Despite his loyalty to the Soviet regime, Feffer was arrested during Stalin’s purges and executed on August 12, 1952, during the Night of the Murdered Poets. He is worth remembering not only for the lyrical intensity of his verse, but also as a symbol of the profound contradictions faced by Jewish artists navigating survival, identity, and expression under totalitarian rule.
This event will commeorate the poets through a recounting of their history, through recitals of their poetry in Yiddish and English, and through song.
