This past week, Kayla and Levi from Moxie Coffee Company (where Little Cole sources our roasted coffee from & my old stomping grounds) traveled to Guatemala to spend time with the folx a part of the CODECH (Cordinadora de Organizaciones de Desarrollo de Concepcion Huista) cooperative in the region of Huehuetenango. High in the Sierra de los Cuchumantes mountains Levi (General Manager) and Kayla ( Production Manager / Roaster) of @moxiecoffeeco spent time with people like Wendy Hernandez, a producer who’s coffee I’ve worked with at Moxie over the years and soon we may see her work at Little Cole Coffee Company too. I’ll be sure to share more about Wendy Hernandez and La Bonita with you in the future. Until then…have a read below from Kayla. “It’s really incredible to see how much love and work farmers and producers put in, it isn’t recognised nearly enough. They do much of everything by hand…picking, sorting, drying, pulping, planting and carry huge quantities of coffee on their backs up extremely steep mountains. So much love was put into each bean before it reaches our shops. At the end of the trip some of the women of CODECH (Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Desarrollo de Concepcion Huista) personally gifted me and the one other female presenting a Corte, which is a handwoven wrap skirt worn by the indigenous Mayan women in Guatemala. Each village has their own meaningful colors/ patterns to signify their region. They expressed how important it was to see women on this trip as well and showed me how to put it on correctly. I felt very seen and understood by the women of Guatemala even with our language barrier since I speak very little Spanish. It made me tear up seeing that they also recognize and expressed the importance of me and others like me being a force in a male dominated field. Being gifted something that is such a special part of their culture was the sweetest thing.” - Kayla 📷 Kayla.
