2026 started with an absolutely unexpected bang for me. 💫 While we were driving from Oxford to London, I had this hunch from out of nowhere and I put NOTLEY ABBEY into maps. Notley is the home in the countryside that Laurence Oliver and Vivien Leigh shared in the 1940s and 50s. I‘d always wanted to go there. Turns out, it was 8 minutes away and we took that little detour. Seeing the tree-lined driveway that I’d seen so many times in pictures, I almost immediately burst into tears. The estate manager passed us by and asked if we had an appointment (it’s now a wedding venue run by Harper Weddings) and gave us permission to have a quick look over the grounds. Notley is an abbey that was built in the 12th century and Henry V stayed there, which inspired Larry to buy it. He once said: “Of all the houses I’ve lived in over the years, Notley is my favourite. It was absolutely enchanting, and it enchanted me. At Notley I had an affair with the past. For me it had mesmeric power; I could easily drown in its atmosphere. I could not leave it alone, I was a child lost in its history. Perhaps I loved it too much, if that is possible.” It was a legendary place for the dinners and parties the Oliviers used to host on weekends. Vivien had a beautiful rose garden there and Larry would rehearse his monologues with their cows (all named after parts Vivien had played) as his audience. I have been thinking on and off about this place since 1992. I always wanted to go there but somehow never made it. I am so so grateful today, especially because it was completely unexpected. Thank you, @scottmanley , for taking that detour with me. It meant the world. 🏰👑🎭💝 #laurenceolivier #vivienleigh #notleyabbey
