Gender equality begins with addressing women’s undervalued or unpaid work and contributions. In community health, community health worker (CHWs) are predominantly female (70 % in Kenya) and largely serve as unpaid volunteers despite the critical role they play in driving better health outcomes and universal health coverage #UHC. That’s why we support organizations like @Living_Goods who pay motivating stipends to the 3,000+ CHWS they support in Kenya while advocating for government-led policies and practices that institutionalize compensation and integration of all CHWs in Kenya and everywhere. #womenequalityday

Meaningful youth engagement in food systems is so critical and should not be taken for granted. Young people are the pillars of agricultural production all over Africa and engaging them encourages them to participate not only in Agriculture but to become policy makers. #InternationalYouthDay. #IYD2021 @KGISAfrica #iyd2021

Gender equality is not just a goal: it is critical to the survival of the planet, realizing the rights of all girls and women, and building new economic and social systems that include, and work for, everyone. The historic Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, are considered the most comprehensive blueprint for women’s rights to date. It is imperative that young people who make up approximately 20% of the global population be at the centre of the commitments made at the Generation Equality Forum in Paris. Are you a young person interested in lending your voice and leadership to the Generation Equality process? Join the @youthact_ke movement on Friday, 25th June at 12:00 PM EAT for a youth-led webinar that seeks to demystify what the GEF means and why it is important for youth to actively take up leadership in the Generation Equality process. If you haven’t registered yet go on to @youthact_ke to register and join in the conversation #Youth4GenerationEquality #GenerationEquality #ParisForum

To mark this year's #AfricaDay here are three things we want to celebrate about the African women we work with: 1️⃣ Young women are drivers of change and problem solvers, especially in Africa. Their voices must be heard and their needs prioritised 2️⃣ When the pandemic hit, young women were there empowering and protecting each other in their communities to end gender-based violence 3️⃣ When given agency and choice - that is when African women shine the brightest as role models 📸 courtesy of our grantee PharmAccess, taken by Mwangi Kirubi

"More than half of China's environmental NGOs’ staff are women. They support the government's green transformation, help and monitor companies to achieve more challenging environmental goals, inspire the public to advocate sustainable consumption, and become an important she-force in the field of sustainable development. As one of them, I often encourage my female colleagues to discover and fulfil their potential, which is also a reminder to myself. In China, only the success of women can achieve the success of sustainable development, and also the success of the NGO collective." Dr Li Fang, China Country Director at the World Resources Institute, is the final voice in our #ChoosetoChallenge series profiling women in leadership.

"I #choosetochallenge patriarchy and I choose to challenge poverty. Where they intersect, that is where you will find the largest populations of girls – stuck at home, in domestic roles, working in the fields and married as children, denied their basic human rights. But if we educate girls, they will be the levers of change for improved health indicators, reduced carbon emissions, increased GDP and the education of the next generation.” Safeena Husain, Founder and Executive Director at Educate Girls, is the 11th voice in our #ChoosetoChallenge series profiling women in leadership.

"While women have always been on the verge of traditional science and the political sphere, they are “trailblazers” in environmental protection. Women have a more direct connection with the environment than men. Women are more aware of land, water and forests, more respectful and protective of natural resources, and we pay more attention to the protection of the future of nature and the environment." Yunwen Bai is the Co-Founder and Director of Greenovation Hub and the tenth voice in our #IChoosetoChallenge series.

"I have become increasingly sensitive to the importance of challenging gender bias and promoting gender equity since taking the helm as CEO at Living Goods. I received many emails from women at Living Goods saying how excited they were to be led by a woman and saw me as a role model. This woke me up to the responsibility I had for them.” Liz Jarman at Living Goods is the ninth voice in our #IChooseToChallenge series
