how to fill a raised garden bed without overspending 🌱 save for later 📌 Episode 3 of my beginner’s gardening series —
We’re mid-way through building my dream kitchen garden, and with 4 raised beds to fill, buying that much compost in one go would’ve been seriously pricey 😅 Enter: the Hugelkultur method 🌿 a permaculture technique that uses what you’ve already got. Here’s the layering order:
📦 Untreated brown cardboard at the base (start saving your delivery boxes now) — acts as an organic weed suppressant, breaks down over time and the worms love it
🪵 Old wood, branches and organic garden waste — just avoid anything with weeds, they can germinate even when they look dead
🌾 A layer of grass clippings — we kept ours in refuse bags to ahem, marinate at the back of the garden for a few months 😅 perfect nutrient-rich layer
🌱 Top it all off with peat-free multipurpose compost — way less than you’d need if you started with compost alone
Give it a rake, a good water, and let it rest for a few days (a full week if you can) before planting 👩🏻🌾 The soil level will drop as it settles, so top it up with more compost before you plant 🤍
The best part? All those layers underneath break down over time and feed the soil with even more nutrients. Win win 🌿
Next episode: what we actually planted… this is where it gets exciting 👀 follow so you don’t miss it!

Episode 2 of my beginner’s gardening series — building a kitchen garden from scratch 👩🏻🌾🥦🥕🍅 Creating my dream cottage garden, zero experience, on a budget 📝
I’ve always wanted to grow my own salad leaves and vegetables, so this felt like the right place to start 🥬
Here’s how it came together:
🪵 4 untreated wood raised beds (bought from @gardenshopire + 2 metal arched trellises from Amazon (links to both in stories and I’ll save to highlights 👇)
☀️ picked the sunniest spot, close to the house for rainy-day dashes
left space between the beds for easy movement & digging access
🚫 My first rookie mistake 😅 I laid plastic tarp under the beds for the driveway pebbles… turns out it’s not permeable and the rain just pooled on top. What you actually need is Mypex, it’s a a weed membrane that lets water through, sold by the metre and really affordable.
Quick tip 🌿
Cut the membrane OUT from inside the raised beds if you’re growing edibles. The plastic breaks down into your soil over time, so stick to organic weed suppression in the beds (more on that next episode 👀) so now we have four beds down, ready to fill 🌱
What should I plant first? 👇🏼be sure to follow for more beginner gardening updates 👩🏻🌾❣️
