Granuaile: The Pirate Queen For my final major project for college I decided to design the Legend of Granuaile / Grace O’Malley, the pirate queen, for film. I used her biography written by Anne Chambers as a basis for my text/ script. For this costume I did some in depth research into the 16th century in Ireland and how she would have dressed. This dress that I made is based off of a 16th century dress, the Shinrone gown, which is currently on display in The National Museum of Ireland-Archaeology. Features of the gown included hanging sleeves, a laced bodice and cartridge pleated skirt. The bodice has no side seam. Grainne wears a red petticoat-a common colour at the time to disguise women’s periods. For her character I deceived to incorporate a sleeveless leather kern jacket- which would have been worn by soldiers at the time. I embossed the jacket with curvilinear animal motifs of the time. My finished costume for the character of Prospero from Shakespeare’s The Tempest! The cloak is hand painted with images to represent one of each of Shakespeare’s plays—using the concept that the character of Prospero is a representation of Shakespeare himself and that The Tempest was Shakespeares farewell to playwriting. Thank you to @carolinemackeydesigns for the amazing hair and makeup for this shoot and @campbellgibsonn for his modelling skills #costume #costumedesign #costumefortheatre #costumeforstageandscreen #shakespeare #costumedesignstudent #theatredesign #textiles #sewing #smocking #fabricmanipulation #textilepainting
