Development as a younger athlete in the Sport of CrossFit
I started out in CrossFit when I was 13 and then started learning about the competitive side of the sport when I was 15 years old. There are MANY lessons I’ve learnt over the years to take from to help develop yourself while being younger.
A. Focus on getting bigger and stronger
This does NOT mean to try to PB every session, max out all the time and push the absolute max weight possible.
What this does mean is building up your strength over months and years with plenty of hypertrophy work to build the foundation to build strength upon.
Strength training is a longest thing to build and very often the biggest gap between younger athletes and the elite of the sport.
B. Technique Technique Technique
You want to make sure you develop your technique as much as possible. In your lifting, gymnastics and every other movement.
The better you can move the less energy you’re going to be wasting on every movement and also way less likely of injury. Build that technique to a perfect level before you build in bad habits.
C. Try to have fun with it.
A way too common trend I see is people taking themselves way too seriously, getting stressed over training and competing, and after a few years getting burnt out and then giving the sport up. While you’re developing still have stuff outside the gym to keep yourself happy and healthy both physically and mentally.
Don’t burn yourself up quickly
