Polar Star Couloir. I’d dreamed of skiing this line for years. The planning needed just to get there required more work than I’d ever done for any ski trip. Four flights and a five hour snowmobile ride later, we sat on the ice and stared at the couloir from afar. When we finally stepped into the Polar Star’s walls, the outlook was grim: the couloir was a solid sheet of ice from top to bottom. We pulled the plug halfway up and skied down, hoping a storm was in our future. After 16 days wandering frozen sea ice, a storm finally laid down a coat of fresh snow and we made our way back to Polar Star. Our patience paid off: we skied Polar Star from the top in untouched powder and finished at the bottom with an Arctic sunset.

Half the reason I love skiing so much is because of the places it takes me. We traveled to Norway this March in search of big alpine lines, but the maritime weather had other ideas; it was the first time in my life I was begging for it to stop snowing. We only ended up getting a few clear days - but I like to think we made the most of them. The other reason why I love skiing?? Cause I get to ski fast and take chances…

Epic, then terrifying…this is long, but worth watching to the end.
I post a lot of content about skiing powder and big lines, with seemingly no consequences. But every time we step into the mountains, we are accepting and navigating endless hazards, and that often gets lost in the polishing and curating of social media. So I think it’s important to share these things too, because this is reality.
I skied consequential terrain in considerable avalanche danger, and this was the result. I just happened to turn around at the right time and see this slide coming, otherwise it would have royally kicked my ass. In short, I got lucky, and neither me nor my partner got hurt. But these experiences are always humbling, because the goal is to never be in these situations in the first place. So back to the drawing board…
