Proud sister moment. This past weekend I got to meet my baby niece AND visit the opening of @chuck_dm3 art exhibit. This exhibit closes his two year long residency at @moreancenterforclay , and while many of the works were made over this two-year span, this represents a decade of practice and study. His early works were the ancestral totems, and it’s now evolved to become vases, handbags, giraffes, and other transcendental life forms. The exhibition is called Head in the Sky, Feet on the Ground, and the heart of it lives in every single piece he created. For one, his installation “pieces of a man” is a constructed altar in honor of our dad. With specially chosen items that represent our dad, he also included a sculpted butterfly in homage to our newest ancestor Aunt Linda and a caterpillar for our newest family addition, baby Quinn — the two share a birthday. At the foot is a giraffe who looks journeyed and antique with broken pieces sealed back together. Its name reads “where will my final resting place be?” 🤍 Each piece is a story, and the whole exhibit captures the essence of life beautifully, weaving together timelines and lifetimes and giving us space to rest in it all. Congrats to you, Chuckie! Congrats to the greatest creation of all — life! Baby girrrrl! @sean_conley_ @bmartxo

Come join us to put your Head in the Sky and your Feet on the Ground with Charles Morrison's new exhibition. This texture-rich collection of meaningful pieces explores the power of living in a realm without taking on the customs or values of it. Taking great inspiration from the ancient world and indigenous cultures around the planet, he finds himself working to remind us today of an ancient past. On view now through May 30!

Join us in celebrating the opening reception of artist-in-residence Charles Morrison at the Morean Center for Clay as he shares his exit exhibition, "Head in the Sky, Feet on the Ground", on May 9 from 5-9pm. Morrison’s latest body of work reflects on how we can live in the world without fully taking on its customs or values. Inspired by the giraffe; a creature whose head reaches the sky while its feet stay firmly on the earth; he weaves together spiritual ideas, ancient mythology, and contemporary life. Through clay, as well as print, paint, and performance, he explores spiritual questions, hidden aspects of society, and the histories that shape our present. A graduate of Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana, Morrison began working with clay in 2016 and has exhibited throughout the Midwest before joining the Morean Center for Clay residency in 2024. His work draws deeply from the ancient world and indigenous cultures, inviting us to remember and reflect on an ancient past. We warmly invite you to experience "Head in the Sky, Feet on the Ground" at the MCC and support Charles as he shares this meaningful culmination of his residency.
