This painting has been described as both haunting and beautiful. It depicts a polar bear pausing mid-swim in a still, dark sea, its body twisting back on itself like a question mark. One is left to wonder: how far beyond the canvas does the sea ice—so essential for hunting, resting, mating, and denning—begin? The dark water also alludes to the albedo effect.
