Beijing Silhouettes: a year of light and shadow.
Wandering the city’s hutongs, walls, and modern corners across seasons, I’ve been chasing these fleeting moments.
Framed by ancient pagodas, red palace walls, and geometric architecture, every anonymous figure becomes a part of the city’s quiet drama.
This is how I see Beijing: in the gaps between light and dark, where strangers’ silhouettes meet the soul of the city.

As night falls, Beijing lays aside its hustle. Wandering through city streets, I capture diverse souls after dark, gathering ordinary yet tender stories hidden in the city’s midnight glow.

In this photograph by @chrisyan1981 , light does not simply illuminate — it sculpts silence. The figure appears almost dissolved into shadow, reduced to a fragile contour suspended between presence and disappearance. Against the warm ochre wall and the deep red door, the scene acquires a painterly quality that recalls classical Eastern aesthetics while remaining profoundly cinematic.
What draws the eye is the tension between concealment and revelation. We never fully see the subject’s face, yet the image feels emotionally intimate. The light becomes a language of restraint: soft, controlled, almost reverential. Even the architectural details seem to participate in the composition, framing the silhouette like a memory preserved inside the city.
Rather than documenting a moment, the photograph evokes a state of mind — one of contemplation, solitude, and quiet passage. Beijing here is not represented through spectacle, but through atmosphere: a fleeting encounter between shadow, texture, and human presence.
Do you think mystery makes a portrait more powerful than complete visibility?

Hutongs are narrow alleys that were once ubiquitous in old Beijing. Since residences stand closely connected, locals naturally build deep and heartwarming bonds with their neighbors.
In hutongs, you can always spot various chairs lined up together. Some belong to different families, while others are discarded old ones gathered casually, serving as casual seats for villagers to chat and hang out.
These ordinary chairs are far more than simple furniture. They are tangible symbols of social connection and community belonging. They break the barriers between households, create casual public social spaces, and carry the most down-to-earth neighborhood harmony and simple interpersonal bonds unique to old Beijing. They witness daily trivialities, gather worldly warmth, and embody the most genuine and down-to-earth social ties among ordinary people.

I’m incredibly delighted and honored to be selected for the 12th Eyes on Main Street exhibition. Though I’m based in China and unable to travel thousands of miles to attend the event in person, I can easily feel the stunning visual impact brought by these large-scale outdoor artworks just through pictures. Huge thanks to @eyesonmainstreetinc@americancenterforphotographers and congratulations to all photographers.

Street photography in Venice, from morning till night, different light changes make this little island so charming. Every moment is different, drawing me through the alleys, along the canals, by the sea, constantly exploring unknown paths and meeting different people. What an unforgettable day!
