Views of the snow-capped Southern California mountains and looking out on the Pacific from the ridge above Avalon. Born, raised, and have spent nearly all my life in SoCal, but in all those years I never made the ride across the water to Catalina Island until today. Perfect day on the water and on the trail.

Rising sun and smoky sky behind the tree that doubles as our wind gauge. Calmest in a few days. Hopeful.

So very sorry to hear of the loss of Alto Beta @alto_beta in the Eaton Fire. Such a wonderfully supportive and generative space for artists, such a loss. Brad, I'm glad to know you and yours are safe. I hope there's a phoenix story coming in the next chapter. Sad and hopeful and grateful for all you've done and for your well-being.

A view of the Eaton Fire as it was getting going last night around 7:00, and a view of the sun rising through the smoke in Silverlake about twelve hours later this morning. Safely out of danger where we are here, but thinking of people, communities, and friends impacted by these fires: friends on the west side where the fires are burning in the Palisades, Malibu, and the Sepulveda Basin; the community of Sylmar where I began my teaching career at Mission College; and Altadena, which has for so long been home to so many artists, art centers, and arts communities, and which is just a stone’s throw from ArtCenter College of Design. A lot of folks in our thoughts today.

Final days to explore 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙈𝙞𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙚, an exhibition featuring the works of Stephen Maine and Christopher Miles. On view at PFA–Washington, D.C.through January 11th. Open Thursday – Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm. Maine and Miles explore the interplay of positive and negative, interior and exterior spaces, by transforming tactile processes into emerging forms. Their work engages the contradictions of mark-making, with each layer responding to the one before, creating a dynamic visual dialogue. There is a focus on perspective, drawing the viewer into an ongoing negotiation of associations, movement, and optical discrepancies. Both use color as a central optical element, playing with opacity and reproduction. Maine’s canvases rely on semi-automatic processes, reusing plates to highlight imprecision and chance. Miles applies layered glazes, creating contrasting effects on internal and external surfaces. They challenge casual spectatorship, encouraging a "close reading" of subtle visual shifts, tensions, and imperfections. The Radical Middle is a concept of mediation that blends opposing political views. Maine and Miles’ art mirrors this philosophy, addressing the complexities of spectatorship and the interaction between haptic memory and optical perception. Video by Jesus Balza. What a treat to see this terrific show of works broadly exploring the range of printmaking and print media by artists Kimiko Miyoshi an Tava Tedesco at the Palos Verdes Art Center. Totally made my day to see this show just before the holidays. The artists are on hand meeting the public today between 1 and 3. @tava_joi @pvartcenter
