This is one of the mightiest card combinations in Cities of the Ancient Cosmos - Hercules armed with the Thunderbolt of Zeus. Adventurer cards like Heracles are used to fight monsters in the game. You can fight with an adventurer if you pay their cost (shown at the bottom of Heracles' card). Then you can equip them with gadgets to enhance their power. The way combat works is you add up all of the bonus numbers from gadgets, argonaut tokens and anything else (eg some building cards give you a bonus if you are defending the city they're in) and then roll the dice shown. In the picture, Heracles would get two dice from his card and one per argonaut token for a grand total of four dice. With all that power, you'd likely get a combat score high enough to kill the games' toughest monsters, scoring you victory points and freeing your cities from their clutches. . . . . #cardgame #indiegame #illustration #boardgame #gamedesign #boardgamedesign #vectorartwork #gameart #conceptart #picoftheday #limitedpalette #drawing #boardgaming #artistsofinstagram #digitalart #gamedev #tabletopgames #boardgames #blackfigurepottery #characterdesign #gamingcommunity #mythology #ancient #myth #greek #tabletop #cards #bgg #cardgame

I've just finished the last of the illustrations for the icon explainer cards. These are handy reference cards to explain the icons players will come across in the game. As they are jumbo cards (twice the size of a regular poker card) they also offer a nice big area for an illustration! Scroll to see others for the exploration phase, exploration dice and building phase. A major goal with playtesting feedback is to get these icons to a point that players rarely need to refer to these cards as the game will have a consistent design language for the icons. My hope is that after playing the game for a short time all players will need is glance at the game cards to understand what they do, so they can concentrate on strategy and not on deciphering icons. . . . . . #cardgame #indiegame #illustration #boardgame #gamedesign #boardgamedesign #vectorartwork #gameart #conceptart #picoftheday #limitedpalette #drawing #boardgaming #artistsofinstagram #digitalart #gamedev #tabletopgames #boardgames #blackfigurepottery #characterdesign #gamingcommunity #mythology #ancient #myth #greek #tabletop #cards #bgg #cardgame

My prototype arrived last week so I've been going through it to see how it plays. I have identified a few things I'll probably change, including increasing the size of the player cards, change the resource cubes for stacks of tokens of various values (probably 1, 3 and 5) and, of course, the first thing I notice when I get a print is all the small tweaks to symbols and wording, even though I've seen it a million times before on screen! However, overall it works really well as a physical game and it makes a great statement when it's all laid out for game as in the first picture. Scroll to see the components in closer detail. Next I'll be working on those tweaks and continuing with playtesting. My prototype for Cities of the Ancient Cosmos has arrived! Everything is looking good and I can't wait to play some games with physical components. This will help me get a feel for the game and what works and what doesn't in the design. . . . . . #tabletopgames #gamedesign #games #design #art #illustration #cards #cardart #futuristic #scifi #futurism #retrofuturism #drawing #boardgames #cardgames #prototype Follow me for more on my game design and illustrations at @christopherbrooksuk

I'll be pitching Cities of the Ancient Cosmos to a panel at Comic-Con San Diego this Sunday. A panel of industry experts will listen to my concept and gameplay pitch and share their feedback and their ideas about how I should progress with it. I'm really excited for this opportunity and looking forward to hearing their thoughts! If you'd like to watch the pitches you can follow the link in my bio. It's free! #comiccon #game #gamedesign #design #pitch #tabletopgaming #gamedev #games #gamer

Icon explainers for Cities of the Ancient Cosmos. With a lot of cards in the game showing icons Instead of text, these large cards show the rules for each of these icons. There are a lot! But they have a design language in common so I'm hoping to hone this through testing until it's very clear and players will be able to work out what most icons mean after a little time without needing to refer to these. These are the cheapest and weakest city cards, and the most expensive and powerful city cards, from my game-in-development, Cities of the Ancient Cosmos. I've been working on tweaks to the illustrations and balancing the cards costs and benefits recently. The goal is to make each it feel exciting as you unlock new buildings and resources through the turns, so that by the end of the game players have built a powerful empire and can afford to add the most expensive city cards and reap the rewards! The style of the cards sits between the two influences to the game's theme, retrofuturism and ancient Greece, and it's been a fun springboard for card ideas to think of ways to combine the two. Like a launch ramp with pillars! Similarly, the granary card is a homage to a famous futurist-style donut shop (you know, the one with the giant donut on the roof). #tabletopgames #gamedesign #games #art #illustration #cards #cardart #boardgames #digitalart #gamedev #futuristic #scifi #futurism #retrofuturism #googie #drawing

I've added four new temple cards to Cities of the Ancient Cosmos. I needed more so the game could work for up to 6 players so I've added Helios and Selene (the gods of the sun and moon respectively) and Eos and Astraeus (gods of the dawn and stars). #tabletopgames #gamedesign #art #illustration #game #cards #adobe #futurism #futuristic #gamedev #vectorartwork #boardgames #boardgamedesign #drawing #digitalart #mythology
