I was feeling deeply sad yesterday and reflecting upon the patterns of sadness that have persisted throughout my life. Fortunately, Iāve learned the ability to lose myself in musical improvisation in order find myself in a better state once I return.
Iāve always felt very intimidated by the idea of sharing my negative emotions with peers. I worry it will make people write me off as weak, unhealthy, or socially unstable. The high-energy digital-content marketplaces that social media sites are becoming certainly do not help motivate me otherwise.
Hereās to the fact that we all face sadness, and as in all things emotionally vulnerable, it can be both valuable and beautiful.

āWhite Butterflyā is an original composition that I conceived of 3 years ago. This is a jazz-fusion rendition Iām working on, but it was first written as a piano song with lyrics about losing the feeling that thereās magic in the world.

āThe Patternā - a new original composition blending modal jazz and chamber music sounds.
I built this track piece-by-piece using sampled acoustic instruments. After writing the piano part, I spent multiple takes improvising performances for each additional instrument via MIDI keyboard in Ableton Live, and finally made some basic edits and adjustments to glue everything together.

The low-poly, barren digital voids and 90s electronica soundtracks of turn-of-the-century video games were unsettling, existential, and fascinating for me while I tried to make sense of the world as a young child.
Today, I have such a strong nostalgia for how I remember the eerie parts of that aesthetic.

To me, it feels like speaking a language. In a good conversation, you donāt think about the words; you just express and react to ideas in a flow state. You can have that same conversation directly with your instrument.
Itās abstract, but thatās the feeling.

For this set, I improvised alongside a custom music plugin Iāve been developing. It tracks my scales in real time and generates complimentary chords on the fly.
