We try to do something new with every work we make.
A first for us with “Odette” was shooting a film with two Cinematographers. We brought on board the talented Scott Pope as a 2nd Cinematographer to join forces with Cinematographer/Producer Chris Bennett, our stalwart collaborator for the last decade.
Chris shot of all our nighttime scenes - the underground laboratory with the mysterious glowing cube, where we first meet young Odette and her obsessive scientist mother Erma. This world was imbued with a blend of claustrophobia and wonder, through the use of Chris’ stylised lighting and restrained camera movement.
Scott shot all our daytime scenes - the domestic realm where Erma finds the now-adult Odette, and Odette’s own daughter, where the intimacy of the family’s interior life is threatened by the failing world outside. Scott evoked the warmth and unease of this setting through the use of primarily natural light and a looser, more naturalistic handheld approach.
It is in this world, within Erma and Odette’s embrace, that our film finally stops to exhale: “You’re here. That’s enough.”

For the last while I’ve been working on some projection design for @rubikscollective ’s new performance ‘Rorqual’, and I’m super excited to show people. It’s a haunting, moving, piece of music that takes you on a journey from oceanic hypnotic beauty to turbulent waves of energy.
