SWIPE to see a new project that I’m very proud of! This garden was a challenge to design as it had to be designed around some large existing features, mainly the pool, pond, and obviously the strong architectural home. It is all pulled together with some new hard landscaping features, curved pathways and heaps of planting 🪴 This garden was only planted in the middle of this hot summer, so next year it is going to really burst into life! The main features of the design are a curved cantilevered @millboard_live_life_outside deck, overhanging the revitalised pond. @johnstonelandscapes did an amazing job of this. Masses of new planting, both front and back, help to ground the house into its surroundings. The existing trees are now underplanted with a matrix of woodland edge plants! There’s an edible meadow alongside the deck. Taking inspiration from the RHS Chelsea garden I co-designed with @sidhillecogardens A favourite piece is a bespoke curved iroko bench that I built with my main man Joe, this wraps around a stunning fire pit and some precision radial setts that @johnstonelandscapes installed. The driveway has been re-worked with large Fagus topiary and contemporary block planting of grasses. Then a shady overhang with picture frame windows into the house is underplanted with a shade loving matrix and tree ferns. I can’t wait to see this develop in time. @johnstonelandscapes & I have worked together for a few years now, making the build such an enjoyable and collaborative process, and of course they tackled any on site challenges with ease. Thanks @johnstone_landscapes_jake 👌 📸 by @jacobgibbinsphoto More to share soon #gardendesign #gardensofinstagram #landscaping #moderngarden #plantingdesign #landscapecontractor #gardenlove

EXCITING NEWS ALERT! 🌱 I’m thrilled to announce that I am now an ambassador for @rethinkmentalillness and to kick things off I’m supporting them with their ‘Let’s Rethink’ campaign. This campaign looks at how stigma around mental illness affects people and how we can tackle it. Mental health and specifically mental illness is something that is close to my heart, as my Dad lives with paranoid schizophrenia. I am his main point of care and regularly have to navigate the challenging world of mental health support when he is in times of crisis. They’re a charity that I have been interested in supporting for a while now as they do amazing work, revealing insights into the realities of living with mental illness and actually providing direct support for those that need it. I’m going to be on @bbcmorninglive this morning talking about this experience and the ‘Let’s Rethink’ campaign, so please tune in. Please search ‘Let’s Rethink’ and download a free PDF to find out more about the campaign. #mentalhealth #mentalillness #schizophrenia

Designing and building a double-radius curved cantilever deck over a pond was never going to be straightforward. With structural steel beneath, an aluminium subframe, and curves on every edge, the project required precision, patience, and constant problem-solving throughout the installation process. As Jake and Chris discuss, there was plenty of trial and error involved to achieve the final result. But the outcome speaks for itself — a seamless extension from the house that sits perfectly within the landscape and delivers exactly what the design intended. Built with @millboard_decking

Transforming a 3mx3m balcony is no easy task… The smaller the space the more important the details. Every millimetre counts in a garden like this. Thanks to @the_rhs & @bbctheoneshow I had the pleasure of doing another Pocket Garden Makeover. This year it was for Lewis and Ricky and their 2nd floor balcony that was also their personal sanctuary to escape the worries of the world. You could tell this is going to be a garden that will be well loved and really make a difference to their lives. Hopefully it showcases what’s possible in even the smallest of spaces and inspires other people to utilise their outdoor space. Big shout out to everyone involved from production to build crew 🙌 #gardensesign #gardenmakeover #gardeninspiration

Toby’s Garden Festival photo dump! My camera roll was mostly pics of animals (no surprise there 😂) and a few selfies, so thanks to @duckgardenplantsandposies and @rhizophyllia for the pics of us all on stage! I had a great time speaking across both days @tobygardenfest and the whole vibe was so relaxed. Thanks @tobybucklandgardens and @sow_much_more for being the best hosts. Plus Lauren & her amazing team who ran the show! Even instagram royalty @gardenwithjonny was there! We had a very cosy Q&A at the end of a soaking wet final day 😂 @powderhamcastle is the best setting! What other festival has a deer park, the most amazing views and a wetland habitat full of awesome wildlife. 🪴🙌 #gardendesign #gardenersofinstagram #gardenfestival

The Bridge House, designed by @chrishullgardens and built by Johnstone Landscapes. The radial cantilever deck is the centrepiece. Projecting out over the pond, its geometry feels effortless, but the execution was anything but. Finished in @millboard_live_life_outside the surface carries the depth and irregularity of real timber, but with a far more refined performance - stable underfoot, low-maintenance, and perfectly suited to this kind of exposed, waterside setting. Edible meadow planting threads through the scheme, subtly tying the garden to the client’s way of living and cooking. A considered, collaborative project - where design, craft, and a genuinely engaged client have produced something quietly exceptional. 📷 - @aspectlandscapemedia @imtomcoleman

At the Bridge House with designer @chrishullgardens and director Tessa Johnstone, reflecting on a garden shaped by strong design thinking and careful collaboration 🌿 Set against a bold, contemporary property, the design takes a considered approach - softening the architecture while working in harmony with the existing structure. A refined example of what can be achieved when design and construction are aligned from the outset - resulting in a garden that feels cohesive, balanced, and enduring.

Garden designer @chrishullgardens walks us through The Bridge House project — where mature trees, a pool, and strong existing features became the foundation for something far more cohesive. A sweeping curved deck draws you in, leading your eye across the space, while generous planting beds wrap around the garden to soften and connect every element. Even the front approach has been carefully designed to complement the home’s modern architecture, with structured planting setting the tone from the moment you arrive. A complete transformation, built with precision by Johnstone Landscapes. 🎥 Videography- @aspectlandscapemedia @imtomcoleman 🪴Designer - @chrishullgardens 📱Socials @imtomcoleman & Co

First glimpses of The Bridge House — though you may have seen a few snippets before, this time we’re taking you on the full journey. A garden shaped around what was already here — mature trees, still water, and a home designed to be viewed through glass as much as walked. Under the canopy, a woodland matrix begins to settle. Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ rises clean and vertical, while layers of ground cover and seasonal perennials soften the edges. Along the approach, Fagus sylvatica is clipped into sculptural ‘Bee Hive’ forms — structured, rhythmic, and quietly architectural. In the shade, Dicksonia antarctica anchors the space with a slower, more ancient presence, set against a linear water feature that brings movement and sound. Elsewhere, planting spills gently between reworked stone — grasses, ferns, and flowering perennials beginning to knit the garden back into something more natural. Every turn reveals a new composition. Every view, carefully framed. We look forward to showing you more soon alongside the Johnstone Landscapes team and designer Chris Hull. 🌿 Designer — @chrishullgardens 🎥 Videographer — @aspectlandscapemedia @imtomcoleman 📱Socials @imtomcoleman & Co
