The promise:
I promised I’d never write her into a song.
I meant it when I said it. And honestly, for over 10 years, l kept that promise. No matter what I was going through, no matter how many songs I wrote - I kept her out of them. I kept us a secret, just like I said I would.
Then I moved back to Austin full time in 2023, and something shifted. The city had her fingerprints all over it. Streets we walked. Places we used to go. And all of a sudden, memories I thought I’d already made peace with came flooding back like they’d never left.
So I sat down. And I broke the promise. Not out of anger — out of necessity. Because some things need to be said even if no one’s listening.

I have these songs that I write that I never think will see the light of day. I call them throw-away songs.
They’re the kind of songs that come to you, and they’re fine, but you don’t ever really play them unless you’ve played absolutely every other song you’ve written… and you’re scrapping the bottom of the encore barrel.
Olivia was astounded that I called it throw-away and insisted that I put it on my set list for @wildguessfest and share it with others.

The gift — SHE was a gift. Every part of it — even the parts that hurt.
I spent over a decade protecting her story. Honoring a promise I made that most people wouldn’t even remember after a year, let alone ten. And I’m proud of that. But somewhere along the way, honoring that promise meant silencing something in myself that needed to be heard.
Moving back to Austin changed that. Being surrounded by the memory of who we were together, I started to understand that telling this story wasn’t a betrayal — it was a tribute. These songs are full of love and full of heartbreak in equal measure, because that’s what that relationship was. They’re dedicated to her. To what she gave me without knowing she was giving it. To the version of myself I became because she was in my life, even briefly. If she ever hears this — I hope she knows it comes from a place of nothing but love.

For more than ten years, I carried her story carefully. I kept a promise that most people would’ve let fade long before then, and I don’t regret that. I’m proud I held onto it. But in doing so, I quieted a part of myself that needed space to speak.
Coming back to Austin shifted something. Being here again, surrounded by echoes of who we once were, I realized that sharing this story isn’t a betrayal—it’s a way of honoring it. These songs hold both the love and the pain, because that’s the truth of what we were. They’re for her—for what she gave without ever realizing it, and for who I became because she was part of my life, even for a short time.
