As Mayday takes its origin as International Workers Day from a labour riot in Chicago in 1886 which was attacked by the police and led to the hanging of eight Anarchist participants who resisted (Google: 'The Chicago Haymarket Affair') I thought this anniversary would be a good time to have this interview I conducted with my ol' pal and legendary anti-fascist Martin 'Lux' Wright, published by the ever-excellent and essential reading @diyconspiracy_net 📸 Of Mart are from his 65th birthday; haranguing EDL at Whitehall a while back; in Angel Alley, Whitechapel a few weeks ago and one of his newspaper 'appearances'; a nazi getting a kicking and a battle with early '70s fash; some of the ubermensch Mart writes about fights with in his autobiography, Anti-Fascist (available from Housman's Bookshop) inc Hoxton NF organiser Derrick Day; a couple of pics via The Rondos from their 1979 Conway Hall gig with Crass which Mart was doing security at... and Crass' wanky statement in The Leveller after they had their arses saved from a kicking by the BM; some of the photos from the London Mayday riot of 2011 I took for Vice at the time and, finally, the poster for the Chicago Workingmen's rally in 1886 and Flavio Constantini's wonderful painting of the confrontation between armed police and bomb throwing Anarchists, without which we wouldn't be enjoying this long weekend of sunshine & drinking now 🍻🌞 Song from the new 12" by @violentdisorderoi #anarchism #antifascism #crass #riot

Just realised I hadn't posted that the expanded edition of Music & Resistance in London is now in the shops which, in addition to my contributions to the original edition I wrote a new piece on The Angry Brigade for. First pic is me in Recession Studios making my 'vocal debut' reading out the role-call of Angry Brigade and Baader Meinhof Gang members at the end of Apostles 2nd EP song 'The Stoke Newington Eight' (as the A.B. defendants came to be known during their High Court trial, and up on YouTube if you want to hear) plus some flyers etc from my Angry Brigade archive; my very cool framed original West German Baader Meinhof wanted poster bought from the flea-market in Potzdamerplatz when I squatted in Berlin and counter-cultural treasures like that could still be picked up cheap as chips. A wonderful surprise to pick up a mystery undelivered parcel and find it to be Nick Soulsby's new book on the history of the Centro Iberico, the legendary squatted Spanish Anarchist/Francoist resistance centre that became the Roxy Club of the embryonic Anarcho Punk scene following those who organised the gigs at the original Wapping Anarchy Centre, funded by the proceeds of the Crass/Poison Girls 'Bloody Revolutions'/'Persons Unknown' split 7" relocating there. Other than the usual spiky-haired suspects (Including several photos I took on a visit there to catch a rare Apostles performance alongside Conflict, Omega Tribe, Riot Clone & Icons of Filth) the book features a vast array of previously unseen posters, flyers, news-cuttings and other ephemera related to the Centro and also covers its relationship with the early Industrial scene: Throbbing Gristle famously played there, as photographed by Kevin Thorne and a few years later Jordi Valls and Centro resident Eliseu Huertas Cos organised an early Whitehouse show with support from the Neo Naturist Cabaret whose member Grayson Perry went on to Turner Prize winning acclaim. By no means least, Born of Struggle, Living in Hope also gives long overdue recognition to Miguel Garcia, the heroic Spanish Anarchist originally sentenced to death by Franco, later commuted to exile following his imprisonment who subsequently took up home and continued the struggle in London. Destined to be Thee definitive text on this iconic venue and anarchist/anti-fascist hub the book can be ordered through the ever excellent @housmans_books .
