Lahnah had been on the road for seven years before they landed in Philly and asked me to play bass. I met them the day of our first practice together. They had already sent me demos of most of the songs on this record. My first impression was that they were doing something unique at a very high level, and I wanted to be a part of it. We played this batch of songs together live for almost two years before recording. In that time we did well over a hundred shows running the gamut from basement spots with 5 people to packed-out bloodbaths that were shut down by police. We shared stages with jazz quintets, hardcore bands, indie bands, ambient artists, noise musicians, rappers, folk punk, joke punk, DJs, and, in my opinion, could hang with all of ‘em. It’s the band I always wanted to be in. Thomas is a frontman from a secret government lab and a singular guitar player. Asher started playing drums when I joined, having previously played bass and electric violin, and became adept on some very difficult material in an unbelievably short time. She is one of the most original thinkers I have ever met. They are both born musicians, and the shit they write together has me hanging on to my bass for dear life. They’re also one of rock ’n’ roll’s great love stories, though they’ll never cop to it. We’ve put in real road miles together and they have become two of my best friends. Fatboi Sharif introduced me to Steel Tipped Dove at Fused Arrow Records, who believed in this album enuf to take a swing and put out the first rock project on his experimental hip hop label, as well as mix his first rock album. Infinite thanks to Dove for all the work he put in to make this possible. Infinite thanks to Sharif for his expansive creative vision and friendship. Infinite thanks to my parents and my sister, who are my foundation, lifelong collaborators, and always supported me in going my own way. Thomas told me that after all the years and shows and albums that Lahnah had been through, that this really felt like the capital-a Album. So we bring you Lahnah by Lahnah: our self-titled debut LP.
