Chip Abbott is an American director, choreographer, and casting director. Chip performed in the broadway companies of On the Town and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and was a dancer in the NYC company of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes. Chip has also appeared in The Gilded Age on HBO, Saturday Night Live, and the feature film Isn’t It Romantic starring Rebel Wilson. Abbott has been an associate director/choreographer to the Emmy Award winning Joshua Bergasse on projects such as the Kennedy Center’s 50th Anniversary Concert on PBS and the broadway revival of On The Town which was recognized with a Tony nomination for best choreography. Chip has also been associate choreographer to Denis Jones on the first national tour of Tootsie the musical, and associate director to Tony Yazbeck on the YoungArts Gala, and Children of Eden at Lincoln Center. Chip has choreographed for ACT of CT, Step One Dance Company, Dancebreak NYC, and has directed shows for Transcendence Theatre Company, RWS Global, MSC Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruiselines, Azamara, and HersheyPark. His work with RWS has won recognition at IAAPA for best theatrical production worldwide, and Travel Weekly’s Magellan Awards. As an educator Chip was on faculty at the world renown Steps On Broadway and Broadway Dance Center in NYC. He is a national reviewer and jazz coach for the YoungArts foundation, and has taught and choreographed at University of Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University, PACE University’s School of Commercial Dance, Point Park University, and Marymount Manhattan College. Chip is a proud graduate of Oklahoma City University. He is currently a casting specialist for Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas.

Filmed classes can be a lot of pressure! Having to learn a combination and film in one session with so much that is out of your control is hardly the best scenario for creating a professional online presence. I teach filmed classes in New York City, but I don’t think that they are the best videos to send to casting. There’s a few reasons. You are rarely the center of attention in the video. You’re automatically competing with those around you for views. Class videos can be distracting and I often find the “information” i need is lacking. When casting is sorting through hundreds of videos, one must think about everything from the thumbnail to the information tiles and how it’s going to pull in and stand out from the sea of other videos. I’m not saying don’t post filmed class videos. They are great for social media and hyper-specific submissions, but if we invest in headshots, why are we not investing in good quality footage where we are the focal point? your heaviest hitting material should come with time and care. Dance Reel Reset workshops aren’t just about a quick process that culminates in filming combinations for a dance reel. The process allows time and space for the dancer to digest, rehearse, and even change steps before a camera is even present in the room. 2 full hours to learn and then we film on seperate day. Getting two takes per combo takes the stress off of a rushed experience. There’s so much confidence and knowledge to be gained and these classes are more about creating a captivating performance rooted in authenticity and focus. Sign up is live for April!
