One of the best gifts recently- Working with @thenomadfilmsociety and becoming more acquainted with the father of African cinema, Ousmane Sembène.
“I myself am the sun” echoes in my mind as the days roll along.
Sembène was an incredibly talented and brave storyteller from Senegal who paved the way for African cinema and dare I say for all black people telling black stories worldwide. Sembène didn’t just tell stories but he challenged who gets to define reality, memory and truth. The way he told stories with complexity and depth has inspired me greatly.
I’ve been checking out his work recently and I really love his film “Black Girl” (1966). Do you know him? And do you know that film? If not, definitely check out his work!
The work continues.
“Hey Siri, Play Oceans featuring Frank Ocean” (2021) by Yannick Lowrey
- as seen at Revolve Art Fair in Miami Art Week 2025. This show was a bold showcase of Black art, culture & community.
Today I’m reflecting on the fact that my parents were able to see my work in @olympiagalleryja ’s current exhibition!!!!
Being able to be celebrated by them means so much to me.
Working with @_he.datboii.legba_ was so fun! Give thanks to the curator for including my work and for workshop coordinators for having me.
The work continues.
