'Strangers In Paradise' (2021) by Yihong Exa Huang is an independent documentary offering a glimpse into the world of "Chilldo", a Chengdu-based queer underground party group 🪩
The short focuses on a collective of twenty-somethings who try to break free of “a small safety bubble” propped by “systems, labels and meaningless routines.” In particular, Huang closely followed the members of Chilldo as they prepared for a party on the last night of 2020, hoping to usher in a new year of new possibilities and community.
“What really drew me to [Chilldo’s] story was the love between people—it’s a community-driven, character-based narrative.” Huang shares.
