A community gathering created a welcoming space for families to join in, with new ampe (children) taking part and engaging in activities together 🌻💛 Ampe worked on spelling, writing and the sound of words, identifying letter sounds, blending them to read words, and then tracing the words. Others focused on numeracy, naming, drawing and counting numbers up to five 🔤 Alphabet learning was supported through singing and pointing to each letter, followed by tracing and naming letters aloud, strengthening early literacy skills 🔢🔠 #earlylearning

Children’s Ground stands with @travis__lovett and the National Walk for Truth. On day 28 on the road, Travis and the Walk for Truth team continue to carry an important message across the country. Truth telling matters for all of us. It matters for First Nations people, for non Indigenous people and for the future we want to build together. We congratulate Travis and everyone walking alongside him for the strength, commitment and leadership they have shown. You can stand behind the walk by signing the open letter calling on the Prime Minister to commit to a national truth telling process led in genuine partnership with First Peoples. Visit walkfortruth.com to sign the letter and support the walk. #walkfortruth #truthtelling #treaty

Children’s Ground strongly opposes the Northern Territory Government’s proposed child protection reforms, which weaken critical protections that help keep First Nations children connected to family, culture and community. First Nations children are vastly overrepresented in out of home care and detention systems across the Territory. Weakening the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle (ATSICPP) will not address this crisis. The current system reflects government failure, not family failure. The ATSICPP exists because generations of Aboriginal children were removed from family, kin, culture and Country under policies carried out in the name of protection. The harm caused by these removals continues to be felt across communities today. Every child deserves safety and the opportunity to thrive. For First Nations children, safety includes strong connection to family, kinship, language, culture and Country. Child safety and cultural safety are inseparable. First Nations communities already hold the solutions. Long term reform must centre First Nations leadership, culture and authority. An excursion full of hands‑on learning with ampe (children) exploring museum exhibits and learning about ancient animals and how their bones were discovered. A highlight was using the telescope to spot tiny bones hidden within the displays 🦴🦴 We also did a scavenger hunt encouraging our ampe to observe closely and match what they found with images and words on their sheets 🔍🕵️‍♀️ Older ampe joined in with literacy and numeracy activities, practicing name writing, rearranging letters to spell animal names and learning games like noughts and crosses drawn in the sand ❌⭕ #earlyyearslearning

Children’s Ground welcomes the Australian Government’s commitment in the 2026 to 2027 Federal Budget to continue funding Children’s Ground services supporting First Nations children, families and communities in the Northern Territory. This funding provides important short term certainty for the continuation of critical health, wellbeing and early years services across Central Australia, Darwin and West Arnhem. At the same time, the independent evidence is clear. Long term change cannot be achieved through short term and fragmented funding cycles. Sustained government investment is required to support lasting outcomes and community led change. Our full statement outlines the impact of the funding announcement, the challenges that remain and the need for governments to back proven First Nations approaches with long term commitment.

Last week, the United Nations raised grave concerns about the systemic racial discrimination of First Nations children in Australia’s justice system. Across Australia, our children continue to be disproportionately targeted, criminalised and harmed by systems that prioritise punishment over prevention and support. While international pressure grows to raise the age of criminal responsibility and end harmful detention practices, governments continue expanding prisons, policing and punitive responses. In the Northern Territory, almost all children in detention are First Nations children. These systems are causing profound harm to children, families and communities. First Nations solutions exist. Governments must stop investing in systems that criminalise children and start investing in prevention, equity and community leadership.
