Celebrated contemporary artist Dale #Chihuly once said, “I want people to be overcome with light and color in some way they’ve never experienced.” Thousands of bold experiments in color, light, and form later, viewers and art historians agree that he has fulfilled this vision and redefined the role of glass in fine art. Chihuly has spent nearly 60 years presenting iconic, grand-scale installations in both important institutions such as the Smithsonian and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and outdoor locations such as the palazzos of Venice and the conservatories of Kew Gardens. His artworks reside in more than 200 museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Palais du Louvre. As much a mentor as an artist, Chihuly’s career has also been shaped by his work as a teacher, establishing the glass program at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design and internationally renowned Pilchuck Glass School. His mentorship continues in his Seattle hotshop, where he directs a team of glassblowers—many of whom are accomplished artists in their own right—to make his grand-scale designs a reality. #Chihuly began his “Macchia” series to explore using all 300 colors in his hotshop, yielding truly unexpected combinations paired with fluid, organic forms. Chihuly’s mother, Viola, had an affectionate nickname for these works and their wild palettes: “The Uglies.” Chihuly’s friend and fellow artist Italo Scanga suggested “Macchia,” meaning “spotted” in Italian.
