Today's Commission on Chicago Landmarks meeting advanced the landmark designation process for a Near West Side skyscraper and a three-block historic district in Edgewater. ✅The former Chicago Daily News Building, 2 N. Riverside Plaza, received a final landmark recommendation. Designed by Holabird & Root, the 1929 Art Deco building helped establish Chicago as a center for modern media and architectural design. It was also the first private office building in the city to include a public plaza. ✅ A DPD report confirmed the department's support for the designation of the Bryn Mawr Avenue District between Sheridan Road and Broadway, finding the proposed protection of 15 contributing buildings built from 1897 to 1929 aligns with the City's planning initiatives for the area, including 2025's Broadway Land Use Framework. Within the proposed district, the Landmarks Commission preliminarily approved demolition permits for non-contributing one-story structures at 5614 N. Winthrop Ave. and 1106 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., and denied a demo permit for a two-story building at 1114 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., citing the structure's history, condition and contributing architectural characteristics.
