I was blessed with a good performance yesterday.
3 subs and 1 refs dec to win gold in my division.
In the open weight I started off my 1st match with a guard pull and won by points. In the 2nd round I ran out of steam and got iced with a beautifully executed kneebar by my opponent.
So many people to thank for helping me prepare from my training partners, to my coaches at DCMMA, my business partner, my nutrition coach, my wife.
I love you all and I’m so grateful to have your support. I couldn’t do everything I do day-to-day without you.
Anyways, just happy to still have the ability to lead from the front with my students and those of you who follow me.

I was a young coach. I had been a Black Belt for barely a year.
There was around 50 people that day and I thought it was like the biggest thing ever.

12 years into full time coaching. Around 2 years after the lockdown madness.
We counted over 100 that day and need all 3 of our mats for rolling.
My favorite part about the comparison of these two photos is the amount of people who stuck with me and now stand out in front with the other Black Belts and have their pictures on the Black Belt wall.
I also love seeing the growth of the gym, the people inside it and all the personalities that give this place such a fun, uplifting and competitive atmosphere.
Congrats again to all of our newly promoted students and new Black Belt.

“Is the gi dead?”
Every now and then someone will ask me this.
It just makes me laugh.
I think some of it comes from desperate online influencers who are needy for attention and will say just about anything to get some engagement.
But consider this. . .
BJJ is still having some of its largest gi competitions ever. Growing, not shrinking.
Here’s another interesting idea to chew on.
I have a bearded hunch that in some years, many of the vocal “anti-gi” types will suddenly find themselves wrapped up in a kimono.
Reminds me of back in the day when I got so much shit from some of the MMA fighters I used to train with. They’d kind of make fun of me for being so focused on BJJ and especially the gi. Fast forward a 10+ years later and some of those fellas are all-in on the South American Ground Karate they made fun of. . . some of them even wear the gi! *GASP* OMG!
Now I ain’t saying everyone will be in the gi. And if you don’t like the gi, that’s fine.
But what I am saying is the gi ain’t going anywhere.

A good weekend for me and the team.
I had the chance to snag some golds and battle it out in the finals against tough black belts I both like and respect.
My guys all showed improvement too.
