<From HAE to the Boy> presents a selection of about thirty works created by artist Cheon from late last year through this summer, chosen from the hundreds of paintings that reflect his prolific and intuitive practice.
Cheon paints the images that arise in his mind with a direct, unfiltered honesty. What may at first seem spontaneous reveals, on closer look, the depth of skill, sensitivity, and affection he has built through years of observation and practice. His bold and candid brushstrokes capture the emotions and thoughts of particular moments, offering a warm gaze toward people, animals, and the everyday scenes surrounding him.
In recent years, Cheon focused mainly on flowers, but this exhibition marks a widening of subjects—into landscapes, figures, and objects—and a deepening of his experiments in color. The striking contrast of pale sky-blue and deep black, a palette he is currently drawn to, defines key works such as One Mountain and Two Hearts (2025), From HAE to the Boy (2025), and the SeaNight series (2025).
The title, borrowed from the poem by Choe Nam-seon and the song by Shin Hae-chul (N.E.X.T), reflects a message of encouragement for youth moving toward an uncertain yet hopeful future. Whether sea or sun, these symbols speak of freedom, resistance, renewal, and aspiration—all of which resonate in Cheon’s work. Though his subjects are ordinary—mountains, fields, seas, churches, cairns, dogs, rabbits, fruits, fish—his pure and direct painterly language transforms them into carriers of comfort, hope, and quiet strength.
For Cheon, painting is a process of meeting himself—a pathway to comfort and healing. <From HAE to the Boy> invites viewers to return to their own inner “boy,” to a place of sincerity and resilience. The boy moving toward the sea, or toward the sun, ultimately becomes a story of all of us.
* Hae means ‘sun’ in Korean, but can also mean ‘sea’ when interpreted as the Chinese character “海” (Hanja).
