The Story of a Man On a Bike That Changed Everything Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann was an employee of the pharmaceutical and chemical department of Sandoz Laboratories. He began studying the fungus ergot as part of a program to purify for use as pharmaceuticals. While researching lysergic acid derivatives, Hofmann first synthesized LSD on 16th November 1938. The main intention of the synthesis was to obtain a respiratory stimulant, by introducing this functional group to lysergic acid. It was set aside for FIVE years, until 16 April 1943, when Hofmann re-examined it and accidentally discovered its powerful effects. He described what he felt as being: “... affected by a remarkable restlessness, combined with a slight dizziness. At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxicated like condition, characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination. In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight to be unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colours. After some two hours this condition faded away.” Three days later, on 19 April 1943, Hofmann intentionally ingested 250 micrograms of LSD, which he thought would represent a prudently safe, small amount, but was in fact a fucking STRONG dose. At first, his trip was NOT pleasant, as people appeared to morph into fantastic creatures, office furniture moved and shifted like living entities, and he felt possessed by otherworldly forces. as Hofmann began to feel overwhelmed by the LSD’s effects, he tried to ride to the safety of his home on his bike. That ride became history. This was the first intentional LSD trip in history. And now, every year on April 19th, we celebrate the moment that changed everything. Hofmann continued to take small doses of LSD throughout his life, and always hoped to find a use for it. In his memoir, he emphasized it as a “sacred drug”: “I see the true importance of LSD in the possibility of providing material aid to meditation aimed at the mystical experience of a deeper, comprehensive reality.”

🧘𝑴𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒂 𝑩𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑷𝒔𝒚𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒄 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 🧘 The spiritual teacher Ram Dass said that “love slowly transforms you into what the psychedelics only let you glimpse.” And this was in the context of how people get trapped within psychedelic experiences – that is, there is a tendency to want to remain in the euphoric, love-filled psychedelic state, but to actually transform as people, we need to take these glimpses of profound love and make that feeling a regular part of our everyday lives. Metta bhavana is the practice that will allow this to happen. The ideal features of a psychedelic community should include: ❤️‍🩹 A culture of non-judgement towards others’ psychedelic experiences, with an emphasis on empathic listening 🫂 A supportive and helpful environment 🌀 A focus on psychedelic experiences and connected themes (e.g. harm reduction, self-development, spirituality, philosophy, etc.)  🗣️ A space for sharing, rather than the feeling that the community is only for self-promotion or sourcing psychedelics. 🤝 Reliability: any effective community should include regular communication or in-person meetings, otherwise a sense of community and connectedness can be lost 🔊 A culture of enabling safe, wise, and beneficial psychedelic use What do you want out of a Psychedelic community?
