Feeling emotional on the eve of my debut film ā€˜Caterpillar’ being out in cinemas nationwide tomorrow, Thursday May 14. This is a film from my heart to yours, a labour of love that pays tribute to the women who raise us all. I made it to be watched with people, so please go and see it at the movies if you can. The opening week of a film dictates how long a film gets to hang around in the cinemas for. I’d like this one to get the chance to fly šŸ¦‹

At her grandmother Tui’s funeral, Chelsie Preston Crayford played Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata on the piano. It was the same one she’d played over and over while visiting her at her rest home, ā€œand she would say, you’ll play that at my funeral one dayā€, says Crayford. Weeks after the funeral, then 19, Crayford was moving into her first flat, and was rifling through records at the Newtown Salvation Army store. She stopped in her tracks. ā€œI found a record of Beethoven sonatas and I pulled it out, and it had my grandma’s handwriting on the corner of it,ā€ she remembers. ā€œIt said ā€˜Tui Preston’, and it was this record of Beethoven sonatas, and she’d circled ā€˜lovely’ next to [Moonlight Sonata].ā€ā   Three years earlier, before Crayford and her mother knew Tui was developing dementia, Tui had donated most of her possessions and abruptly moved out of the house the three women shared. ā€œThree years later, after my grandma had donated all of her records and things, I found it at the Salvation Army,ā€ says Crayford. ā€œThat was the starting point for Caterpillar.ā€ā   Crayford, now in her late 30s, is referring to her directorial debut, set to release in cinemas next week. Drawing from her own upbringing and set in a memory of 2003 Wellington, it follows three women: Cassie, a precocious but emotionally adrift teenager; Maxine, her firecracker filmmaker mother; and Huia, their quiet, observant matriarch. "The thing I wanted to explore using this maternal line is the complexity of these mother-daughter relationships, and all of these various roles we inhabit,ā€ says Crayford. ā€œHow do we find space for ourselves inside of that, and the ways that families smash up against each other. Your needs are colliding all the time, and it’s a constant balancing act.ā€ā   For the cover of our sister magazine Your Weekend, Crayford tells George Fenwick about the different creative energies she draws from acting and directing, what she learned from her own mother, and why her heart belongs in Wellington. This is my dad, Jonathan Crayford. Working with him on the score for @caterpillar__film was one of life’s great gifts. Here he is playing the piece he wrote for the final scene, a big moment which you will only know the significance of if you come and see the film. What I love most about this video is seeing how deeply he embodies the music, in a way that could make you weep, and then just matter of factly gets up and says ā€œthat’ll cover itā€. He is brilliant and also really crack up, and I can’t wait for you to hear his beautiful score. ā€˜Caterpillar’ premieres on May 6th in Wellington and May 7 in Auckland, and is in cinemas from May 14 with Mother’s Day previews before that. Tickets are selling fast, the link is in my bio.
