This is a big thing for me, because it's a mistake I've made many times, so I guess I take this quite seriously. Assuming the motivations of others leads to, making haphazard guesses about what they're doing, what they mean by the things they've said etc. A brief disagreement over a song preference or a venue choice for a meal can escalate into a full argument just because you assumed something about the other person (or vice versa). For example your friend says they'll go out with you one evening, you agree a date and then they don't respond to you on the day when you check they're still coming. Are they ignoring you? If they didn't want to come why didn't they just say so? You finally get a response and they say its because they lost their phone /didn't see your message. But you've already cancelled and told them to forget it, so now they're angry at you losing your temper over nothing and you're angry that they didn't just tell you they didn't want to go out. Except they did want to go out, and they did just lose their phone and now you're not talking, over nothing. When you catch yourself doing this remind yourself that people often do things without thinking too much on potential consequences, ask yourself if it's worth the stress and anxiety of an argument. If you are faced with someone doing it, take a step back and don't get dragged in. Drama is rarely as fun to be in the middle of as it is to watch on TV.
Other people's behaviour is more about them than it can ever be about you.
