My photo series Dances of Steel explores athleticism, consistency, and power within the art forms of mixed martial arts and pole dancing. Though often dismissed by critics due to their associations with violence and sexuality, MMA and pole dancing are some of the most sophisticated testaments of the body. My photo series chips away at this stigma and highlights the beauty displayed in both artforms.
Beyond what’s physically shown to viewers, MMA and pole dancing are often used to heal sexual and violent traumas. By demanding 100% mental focus, Mixed Martial Artists and Pole Dancers rewrite their narratives transitioning victims from a feeling of powerlessness to a feeling of control. Both artforms work as a means of survival.
Within my photographs I frame my subjects as living brushes. The cold steel octagon and pole serve as their canvases, and their blood, sweat, and tears serve as their paint. Through capturing their movement, I highlight the precision, endurance, and relentlessness that are consistent with both artforms. My work displays what can be made when the mind and body are in unison. (1/2)
