Gave students time to work in class, and when they weren’t asking me questions did some sketches of them. Trying out graphic reduction style of sketching. One more week. Students looked tired.
Visited a place from my youth yesterday. Watched The Neverending Story and sketched at the same time. This film was absolutely traumatizing as a kid. The Swamp of Sadness is seared into my mind, as is the Stone Giant looking at his empty hands. Scenes were exactly as I remember them as a kid.
Go see Arco.
“If we want better things to happen, we have to imagine them first”
Just watched a screening with director and producers q&a after. Beautiful movie, wonderful purpose in creating the film. I took notes during the q&a.
Slide 1: rewritten notes after I got home.
Slide 2: film promotion image
Slide 3: original ink notes from q&a
Slide 4: q&a photo with @ugobienvenu & #natalieportman
Slide 5: 60s ad, because director said he’s inspired by work that is inspired by that era, and this ‘feels’ a bit like the film.
Slide 6: Alexander Girard b/c is of similar era style that director was into into (not mentioned by director, but a favorite of mine).

First time running in snow. It’s like having a cushion under your paws.

LA River Ultra 2025 medal. Earned by running 53+ plus miles from Canoga Park to the lighthouse in Long Beach. At least 6 miles of that in ankle deep water. Most of it on hard hot concrete.
Some behind the scenes making of medals for the last slide.
Below is the speech I gave to finishers, participants and volunteers at the breakfast the day after. It explains the meaning behind the elements of the medal.
“This years medal is a little different. I wanted to make something that you might be more likely to wear even if it’s not medal Monday. Something you could wear for support in tough times, as a reminder of how strong you are.
On the front is concrete with sediment from the river. A literal reminder of what you went through to earn this.
On the back side, there is a resin that has encased in it a soda top for the strap connection, reminding us that even used things have value.
For the colors of @skidrowrunningclub , there is are blue and orange elements. The orange is literally orange peel, from my backyard tree. I want to share any abundance I have with you. Finally, they each have aquamarine stone embedded in them. This translates to “water of the sea.” It is used for its properties to promote quiet courage and calmness. It can also help with communication, and find resolution with those you disagree with. Lastly it promotes service to the world, and the development of humanity focused on healing. Which I think we all need a little bit more of now.
Thank you for putting yourselves out there yesterday. Runners and volunteers. And giving me the opportunity to express myself in a way that challenges me. Running is easy for me, but being up here now, and being vulnerable is not. You all make me better than I was yesterday, everyday that I know you.”
Oyster Case Bakeneko
100% biodegradable case, made from natural ingredients from the sea (oyster, seaweed, chitosan). Imagine something like concrete, and that is close to the feel of the final material.
Project making products out of alternative materials, to reduce material toxicity and environmental impact.

@cannon.keys Bakeneko PCB with custom Oyster Composite case. @pryzma.io seafoam switches. @awekeys recycled aluminum copper keycaps. (Sound test coming soon).
Oyster composite is made entirely of natural materials (oyster, alginate, collagen, chitosan) making it biocompatible and biodegradable. Similar properties of compressive strength to concrete, but will breakdown and dissolve to absorbable nutrients when left in water (test coming soon).
The aluminum keycaps have not been tested for biocompatibility, but aluminum does hold the possibility of being biocompatible. Biocompatibility means that the things you touch/interact with are non toxic, and not make you sick.
The goal of the project this is part of is to make objects that are non toxic to humans and the environment alike, and reduce their negative impact on said environment.
What keyboard should I convert next?
Do you have information on other biocompatible/biodegradable materials I might consider?

Svalboard, a light tactile keyboard based on Lalboard and Datahand. Each finger gets 5 keys, that are millimeters or less away from triggering them, reducing the need for hand travel. One of the goals of this is to help those with RSI have a pain free experience.
Typing on it is a unique experience that was nothing like I anticipated. The keys are extremely sensitive, and after a week of use, the feeling has become less alien and more natural. Still need more time to get used to the sensitivity of the keys. Going at about 40wpm, half of my average on my other split keyboards. I’m enjoying it so far, and looking forward to other customizations I can make to it.
It can be purchased prebuilt or as a print the parts yourself kit. I got the kit, and it was extremely easy to assemble all the parts together. No soldering required. Only a piece of firmware to install, that was as simple as dragging and dropping from desktop to a connected drive.

Tiger demo for students. Talked about layout and directing detail focus on a page to create hierarchy.
According to World Wildlife Fund, tigers are endangered with about 5,500 left in the wild. So, go see them while they are still around or do something to aid them in getting off that list.
