Back to Where It All Began: The Power of Wade Fishing with Artificial Lures Bay Flats Lodge – 24 Years of Chasing Fish the Hard Way Wade fishing with artificial lures is where it all began for us—24 years ago, standing knee-deep in the Texas surf and back bays, chasing trout and reds the old-fashioned way. No bait. No shortcuts. Just a box of plastics, a good topwater, and the belief that if we put in the work, the fish would come. Back then, guiding was simpler but tougher. Every cast had to count. We weren’t soaking bait or drifting through pods. We were reading water, watching birds, feeling for subtle changes in depth and current. And when that strike came—especially on a topwater—it was electric. The Original Toolbox We called it “the toolbox,” but really, it was just a well-worn wade box full of plastic tails, slow-sinking soft plastics, and a handful of topwater plugs that had seen better days. These lures weren’t fancy, but they were versatile. Like a Swiss Army knife, they could do a little bit of everything—work the surface, bounce off shell, mimic mullet, or creep through potholes like a spooked shrimp. While poling the skiff around a back lake island, weaving through narrow cuts and winding around smaller islets, we rounded a quiet corner—and to our amazement, there they were.
