Meet a Grantee: Cheek MULA! Cheek’s song “Paying For Hits” puts protest back in Rap by calling out the major label system for being complicit in the violence surrounding the Drill Rap subgenre. He was nominated by Brooklyn’s Guns For Grants, a nonprofit that offers scholarships to those who turn in illegal guns. With a Recording Fund grant, Cheek was able to work with the team of his choice to bring “Paying For Hits” to life and tell a story that conventional funding models might not support. What started as a vision rooted in pain, experience, growth, and purpose is finally starting to take shape. 💚⭐️ I’m beyond blessed to officially begin this journey with STARS — a youth development club created to give young people in our communities real opportunities, real guidance, and real support. Coming from Brooklyn, I know firsthand how important it is for our youth to have access, mentorship, structure, and people that genuinely care. Season 1 is officially here. And this is only the beginning. We are currently recruiting youth ages 13-24 for our Summer Assistance & Development Cohort based out of Bushwick Brooklyn at Bushwick Campus. Throughout the school year, members will work together on community projects focused on: • Entrepreneurship • Job Readiness • Interpersonal Communication • Anti Gun Violence • Restoration After Incarceration • Environmental Studies & Community Building This program is about creating leaders, building confidence, and giving our youth hands-on experience while working amongst their peers in the community. Youth who complete at least 85% of the annual cohort will graduate the program and receive a $500 completion incentive for their commitment, consistency, and impact. 💯 This means more to me than just a program. I truly believe STARS can become a staple in NYC communities and a safe space where young people feel seen, valued, and empowered to grow into leaders. This past Thursday our Youth Director of Culture and Engagement @cheekmula held a powerful circle conversation to discuss the recent stabbing of a 14-Year Old on Tuesday in Bushwick, literally steps from our program. Economics, Mentality, and Remorse, stood out as they discussed motive, cycles of violence and Pride. The internal struggle of feeling “Soft”, when walking away. #BushwickStars #Stars

This past Saturday, August 30th GCAMP held our Back-To-School Backpack Giveaway in front of the playground at the Audrey Johnson Learning Center. It has been a very long time since a Negro-led non for profit has had a mission-driven purpose for the “Darkside” of Bushwick. We are overjoyed by the community showing and the amazing young people who came to draw, color, face-paint and receive a backpack full of school supplies.
