A fleet of 30 machines idling just 15 minutes more than necessary per day doesn't feel like much. But over a year, that's roughly 2,700 hours of engine time producing nothing. No material moved, no value created. Just fuel burned and service life consumed. ⛽
It's one of those costs that hides in plain sight. It doesn't show up as a single line item, so it rarely gets the attention it deserves. But it adds up in fuel, in CO2, in wear, and in the gap between what your fleet could be producing and what it actually is.
Reducing idling is less of a technology problem and more of a behaviour problem. Leaving the engine running during a break or between loads becomes habit. And habits don't change because someone sends a reminder email.
What we've seen work is making the data visible to the people operating the machines, not just management. When operators can see their own active vs. idle time and compare it across teams and sites, something shifts. Add a bit of friendly competition and the motivation comes from the ground up, not top down. 📊
One of our customers reduced idle time by 25% simply by giving operators visibility into their own data and a reason to engage with it. ✅
