A line of half-dead trucks and borrowed trailers slipped through town before sunrise, quiet as they could manage, not stopping for anything but gas they didn’t bother paying for. Some folks say that’s when they showed up. Others swear they’ve been moving through these lake towns for years,taking work where they can, gone again the second things get too tight or too loud. There’s always mention of a night somewhere else that didn’t end right, but nobody sticks around on it long enough to explain.
What’s certain is they don’t come down much. They stay up in that grandstand like it’s the only place left that’ll hold them.
