Hard to believe it’s been three years of Check your phone 📱 with @petewentz . In between checks we’ve been making lots of music. Loads more to come from us but for now, here’s a throw back and appreciation of Pete and this iconic content during the 2020 lockdown.
Lately by @cheapcuts and @benjaminfrancisleftwich ...... my remix is out.
@jacklouisleonard and I shared a stage in UNKLE Live and wrote, and I engineered for Rudimental which was @jonnyghostwriter other home for a bit too. So this one was always going to happen eventually.
Took it onto the floor. Big love to them all. x
Lately (Chinatown version) is out now. Ben had written such a beautiful song that I wanted to make a version that showed it off in its proper light. Here’s a little vid of me talking about it … the OG took about 4 years to make in total, this one took a day… I might prefer it? Cant decide 💙

Listen to Cue the Music on TooHotRadio.net today 15/10 at 5-7pm UK and hear Jack Leonard talk about some of the tracks and stories that have made up his DJ journey so far. He tells us how he became part of Unkle with James Lavelle before setting up Big Bear project Cheapcuts with Jonny Harris. He also talks about how their new single, Lately feat Benjamin Francis Leftwich, came about.
It was Valentine’s Day… at the time I was between studios. My mate Fletch had a massive warehouse that looked onto West Ham Stadium in Hackney Wick that he needed filling during the day; so I was set up there for a while (acoustically a nightmare, but I got so many songs out of that place!)
I originally asked Ben to try vocals for a different song. I was certain THAT one was the one , but for whatever reason it didnt work… I remember Ben was on fire that day and we had limited time. Thank god I changed gear…
The OG track before Ben was called Background Radiation - it was a collage of sounds made up of different phone recordings, videos, and studio sessions over the past 4 years or so. Alot of it just random. We kept adding to it and landed on an LCD / talking heads type instrumental which we loved but never knew what to do with , and it never really fitted with anything we’d done before…
Ben said it reminded him of walking through central London - the different voices / snippets of life you hear when passing people on a street… the 2second window that opens on a stranger trying to figure out a problem or rectify a mistake. The conversation turned into a one way monotone stream of consciousness... I got out the way. Most of the videos of that day are me just walking around trying to influence as little as possible!
45 minutes and around 20 verses later, we had something.
Lately is out on Thursday 25th September.
