The new green space provides recreational opportunities for East Side Elementary students during the day and for the broader community outside school hours.

With the Ironman 70.3 triathlon set for Sunday, drivers across the Chattanooga area should prepare for multiple road closures.
The triathlon begins Sunday morning, with athletes participating in the swim portion beginning at 6:50 a.m. and transitioning to the bike race from 7:15 a.m. until 9 a.m. Runners will be on the Riverwalk, Amnicola Highway, the Veterans Bridge, Barton Avenue and Riverfront Parkway between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., according to a press release.

When Giselle Palmer assigned her fourth graders at East Side Elementary a research project recently, several students chose to focus on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other immigration related topics.
As they delivered their speeches about what they imagined the world would be like if people didn't have to worry about ICE, she said, the students would say things like: They could go to the park or shopping and not be worried and think they have to stay home all the time.
"A lot of kids are afraid of what could happen to their family and family members, and they definitely know more than a kid that age should have to be worrying about, in my opinion," she said by phone. "It is something that has been on kids' minds a lot."
