“Purple apple,” Willa Wasserman’s first solo show in Brazil, opens today, Wednesday, Feb 25 at FDAG Jardins, in São Paulo. The exhibition brings together intimate, small-scale paintings on linen and brass alongside expansive works on fabric.
“Wasserman picks at the lock of painting, hoping to enter not by force but through patient attention—learning where the medium resists and where it yields. In her work, monastic discipline meets disruption: drawing equally from the formal austerities of early seventeenth-century Netherlandish still life and the political urgency of punk album art,” writes Ksenia Soboleva in the critical essay accompanying the exhibition.

I don’t believe that art can change anything, but I know that it bears witness, and is a process of witnessing. Art witnesses both whatever it looks at and whatever defines its time. Isn’t real’s US-backed genocide of Palestine defines this time. And I wanted to witness the mass grave that defines the city I live in. I wanted to show how close the death machine of imperialism is.
++
I painted the mass grave at Hart Island in New York City. Over a million people are said to be buried there in collective plots. Today, just as in the 19th century, all burials are performed by incarcerated people.
In a world dominated by US power and capitalism, some people’s lives are deemed more ‘valuable’ than others. A mass grave anywhere, and they are everywhere, testifies to this.
Gaining access to the cemetery was a two year, ultimately failed bureaucratic process. Even families of those interred face extraordinary hurdles against visits.
The first day I went to the shore of the Bronx, a point close to Hart Island, the sky above the estuary was overcast. I see double at far distances because of eye issues, and in the fog, the island appeared to be floating above the horizon—like a Fata Morgana.
IOF assassinating journalists to conceal their other atrocities just as they do in the genocide in Palestine:: with the US lending every support imaginable, material, propaganda etc, just as it builds its own infrastructure of genocide at home:: clearly the current US position can only endorse and actually requires colonial violence like this as cover for its own ambitions @dropsitenews : next slide small quick painting /drawing of drone operator firing at woman and child:: rest in peace Amal Khalil and Ali Shoeib

Wasserman engages questions of intimacy, gender, and metamorphosis, weaving references to classical painting and material culture with contemporary expressions of queer experience. Working on fabric and metals, the artist treats the support as an active participant in each composition. Oil, silverpoint—traces drawn through the friction of silver on a primed surface—and chemical processes are applied in ways that allow oxidations, stains, and tonal shifts to surface and remain legible.

“Purple apple,”Willa Wasserman’s first solo show in Brazil, opens next Wednesday, February 25 at FDAG Jardins, in São Paulo. The exhibition brings together intimate, small-scale paintings on linen and brass alongside expansive works on fabric, produced between New York, where she lives, and São Paulo, where the artist is currently undertaking a residency at Casa Onze.
For several years, Wasserman has worked through still life as a way of thinking visually, treating objects as a form of quiet composition rather than symbolic display. She paints flower arrangements and garden scenes, such as “Rose (from the garden at the reclaimed house)” (2026), where pigment seems to merge with the metal surface, giving the images a quiet, ambient depth.
