눈 덮인 산속 마을. 이름 모를 사람들이 짐승의 털과 뿔을 뒤집어씁니다. 그들은 짐승이 되고, 신이 되며, 다시 인간으로 돌아옵니다. 샤를 프레제는 그 의식의 한가운데에서 셔터를 누릅니다. 그의 카메라 앞에 선 존재들은 분명 인간이지만 동시에 인간이 아닌 무언가입니다. 샤를 프레제는 유럽의 여러 나라를 돌며 겨울마다 반복되는 의식을 기록했습니다. 사람들은 짐승의 가죽을 입고 뿔을 쓰며, 방울과 나뭇가지를 매달고 산속을 행진합니다. 악령을 쫓고 죽음을 내몰아 봄을 맞이하기 위한 의식입니다. 렌즈 앞에 선 사람들은 축제의 참가자가 아니라, 인간의 껍질을 잠시 벗은 존재들이었습니다. 그들의 눈빛엔 사냥감의 본능과 신 앞에서 느끼는 두려움이 남아 있었고, 프레제는 그 속에서 문명이 지워버린 감정을 포착했습니다. 그가 마주한 것은 단순한 분장이 아니라 인간 안에 잠들어 있던 오래된 기억이었습니다. 그리고 그 기억은 어쩌면 지금의 우리 안에도 여전히 남아 있는지도 모릅니다. 문명이 인간을 길들였지만, 그 안에 남은 야생의 흔적은 정말 사라졌을까요? 신을 닮으려는 욕망과 짐승으로 돌아가려는 본능은 결국 같은 방향을 향하고 있는 건 아닐까요? 어쩌면 우리는 아직도, 짐승과 신 그리고 인간의 경계 어딘가에 서 있는지도 모릅니다. ⸻ 더 많은 이야기가 궁금하다면? 피사체에서 샤를 프레제의 사진집 ’Wilder Mann : The Image of the savage‘를 만나보세요. © @charlesfreger

A propos de l’Arlésienne, le couturier Christian Lacroix, lui même fils d’Arles, écrit : « Cette femme, son allure et ses atours sont enracinés dans la terre, les pierres et notre chair. Les créateurs parisiens se surpassent. Mais ils ne sauraient rivaliser avec cette alchimie obscure des rubans et des velours, des brocarts et des dentelles, des satins et des bijoux où s’expriment chaque quartier, chaque village, chaque famille. GHANTA PATUA NRITYA Odisha, festival, between March and April In the procession of Ghanta Patua Nritya, one hears the wooden stilts bang against the ground as the artist performs their rhythmic movements, along with the beating of brass gongs known as ghanta. A band of patua (performers) carry a brass pitcher raised on a wooden stick while balancing on wooden stilts. Others still supplement the rhythmic sound of gongs by banging on the brass object. This is the Ghanta Patua Nritya. The brass pitcher personifies the mother-goddess, who has many names – Sarala, Bhagwati, Chamundi and Hingula, to name a few. It is decorated and filled with banana leaves, hibiscus flowers and coconut shells, a common offering to the goddess. The pitcher is then attached to a wooden stick with mud from a sacred river. The male patuas then carry the pitcher on their head and perform in different villages in April. Patuas deliver blessings in return for alms, ending their performance in any local temple dedicated to the goddesses. Dhur, GUTOR CHAM Sikkim, India From the AAM AASTHA series 2019-2022 Cham is a sequence of ritual dances traditionally performed in monastery courtyards in Tibet, and after Tibetan migration in 1959, the celebration continued in Ladakh, Sikkim and Bhutan. On the day before the Tibetan new year’s eve, the holiday of ‘Gutor’ is celebrated. Gutor Cham is a ritualistic dance rooted in the Tantric tradition (Hindu and Buddhist mythicchants). It is performed to drive away evil spirits along with the misfortune and disaster they bring. The mantras (chants) and mudras (hand gestures) indicate the influence of Indian mythology, while the stag or deer dancers were an important aspect of pre- Buddhist Tibetan culture. There are many segments in a Gutor Cham. One of the most important involves the Shanag (Black hat dancers), who make offerings for the deity and destroy the linga, a symbol of evil and darkness. The linga is laid down in front of the Dhur (Skeleton mask) dancers, the Lords of the cremation ground. Dhur have an eerie appearance, but perform comical sets and gestures in the cham. Gutor Cham was the last rite performed in the Patola palace in Tibet, in February 1959. Bortokola Bird, Tiwa masks, Tetelia village, Guwahati District, Assam, India Borot Utsav is a festival of the Tiwa community, where many deities, some local, are worshipped. Celebrations occur every three to five years, on a full moon night in December. The Tiwa people are native to Assam, and also inhabit some parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. The community’s main occupations are farming and collecting forest firewood. The word ‘Borot’ is the same as ‘vrat’ or ‘keeping fast’. The tribe selects a young pre-pubescent girl as the borotani kumari and worships her as a representation of all creation. Her fasting is believed to bring luck and ward off evil. In the festival, elders of the community perform rituals and the young adults perform a music and dance performance for the gods watching from heaven. The dance performance is the final part and the main attraction of the festival. An oval or round area is lit and decorated with 360 earthen lamps and flowers. Here, the performers mask themselves as disciples of the deities who have come to observe the festivities. While most send their animals and other residents of heaven, Shiva, the lord of evil beings, sends the characters Jokhini and Rakhyak.
