If you thought you knew CF and her dark romance era, we definitely don’t know her in the dark academia era. Holy moly. This new era is one I’m here for.
Man, from the beginning I was so caught off guard. Enzo Marchetti, (second generation) will throw you. He’s dark, he’s gray, rough around the edges, protective but deep,deep down he’s caring and loving. He’s loyal to a fault for those he loves. One thing is for sure he runs St. Vale University. Blair DuPont is new to St. Vale, but she’s running from her past. She’s full of secrets and a total mystery. Leave it to Enzo to be enamored and enthralled with her from the first interaction.
Of course, we get the banter, the push and pull. You can feel the darkness and edginess of their story oozing off the pages. This slow burn is full of tension, lies, deceptions, secret societies, and twist and turns. I was definitely caught off guard by a few things that happened. I do love how it all comes together in the end, but it was definitely a roller coaster to get there. Great read.

This wasn’t a fountain for wishes. It was one for sins and ruin. A place to drown your secrets. My arms flailed weakly as my fingers scratched at the stone. Time stretched like I was dealing with the slowest hourglass. With each passing second, my chest felt more constricted. As I shut my eyes, my strength dissolved. My limbs felt heavy, useless, broken. Every part of me was on the verge of collapse. My body was desperate for air, for relief, and ready to surrender to Enzo. To let him win. To let him own me. At the same time that thought hit, he lifted me from the water. My face broke through the surface, and I dragged in air like I’d just discovered what it was. Heavy gasps tore from my lungs as I violently coughed and spat up water. His massive hand gripped the back of my head to suspend me above the water. Water streamed off my face. He fisted my wet strands to remind me who was in control. “Now, I’ll give you one more chance.” He tugged my head back until our eyes met. “Either I kill you or you agree to be my Fawn.”

“Did you just fucking cut my hair, you asshole?” were the ones she found. Her attitude impressed me. I uncrossed my arms to pop my knuckles, matching her glare. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She inched closer, holding up her hair. I rolled my eyes. She was lucky I was too lazy to snatch my knife and take off a few more inches. At my lack of answer, she held her ponytail in front of my face. “You cut my hair, you psycho.” I swatted the ponytail away. “I’d rather not get lice, thanks.” She spun toward Nelson. “You all just saw that, right?” She lifted her ponytail as proof. I loved that her voice trembled and cracked. Her being on the brink of crying made my cock hard.

Sound vanished as water rushed into my ears. I’d never felt such a sharp sting before. For a split second, I froze. Then instinct took over. I thrashed my head wildly in all directions as I struggled to break loose. My hair unraveled in the water, floating around my face and blocking my vision. I tried to push myself up, palms scraping the stone lip, but they slipped off the slick edge and sent me deeper beneath the water instead. Just like he’d said, he’d always win. Water forced its way into my mouth as I struggled to breathe. The taste was metallic and stale, like old coins and moss. This wasn’t a fountain for wishes. It was one for sins and ruin. A place to drown your secrets.

“You ever play the game Russian roulette, Blair?” I asked, inserting the bullet into the revolver before spinning the cylinder. “This is my version. Each time I ask you a question, and you don’t answer, I hold this gun to your head and pull the trigger. You have a one in six chance of that bullet being the one that tears into your temple, shattering your skull and splattering your brain matter around this room.” I lifted the gun and ran the muzzle along her cheek. She shuddered, her eyes darkening, and she flinched as the cold metal grazed her skin. “Are your secrets worth your life, Blair?”
