Introducing Part 1 of Sans Souci— a French phrase meaning ‘free of care’. A client came to me with a feeling and a memory of her Italian grandmother and her Finnish Grandfather as inspiration. The results were a honest, playful yet elevated lake house retreat from everyday life. I have so many favorites, I’ll post again tomorrow 🤍
2026 vs 1997
When I was a kid I always answered the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” with “Artist.”
I may not be a traditional artist in the expected sense, but I spend my days making spaces, objects, and moments feel good. 1997 Carrie would be proud.
What did you want to be when you grew up?!
People ask me all the time “Where do you find these things?” The best answer I have is keeping my eyes open most of the time, if not all of the time. If I have 20 minutes or 2 hours, I am looking at places unassuming or familiar. At night, in the quiet, I save endless pieces I will never call my own. But the moment a client or friend mentions a hole in their heart for said piece I like to say, “Let me show you this ____ I found!” Most people call it antiquing or thrifting, if I get paid for it, I call it sourcing.
My mind is an archive that I tuck ideas, colors, objects and moods into. Sometimes they never see the light of day but that’s alright. I’m just happy someone many years ago made really beautiful things that we still get to enjoy.

I was being a bit sheepish about my unfitted kitchen while I gathered my pieces and hired a contractor. But am proud to say, I found someone willing to create a European inspired, 19th century look with me. This beautiful, massive pine larder is the cornerstone. She will be fitted with a copper trough sink and pilled high with dishes and glass jars full of provisions. New gas and electric will need to pulled to this room along with opening up the ceiling to tie the plumbing legally into the stack. Oh, and we cant forget lights while we open her up. Now that I have some momentum, I am pleased to show the process.
Now, this type of kitchen may not be right for everybody. If you have followed me for a while you will know I live to create environments. It keeps me up at night and gets me up in the morning. For practicality’s sake, on the other side of the wall is our current working kitchen equipped with a refrigerator, food storage, dishwasher, etc. Long term are looking to make it into a scullery (iykyk). Right now we are in the bidding process to see what it looks like to remodel or keep what we have and style it to look cohesive. Links in bio for @shopmy to see what I’m curating for the space.
9 months in, 9 months out
Roman is crawling around the entire house. Franco is wild and free while Leo read 100 different words yesterday. When I first met my husband I used to say I wanted to create something truly original. Well I finally did. The Valentine Stearns boys.
After many months on my maternity sabbatical, I’ve been quietly working with past clients while learning how to hold both my boys and design in the same hands. Yesterday, I stepped back into a residence in Afton that I designed a couple of years ago, back when I was birthing Roman the paint was still drying, the lights being hung. It was the first time I’d seen the home fully lived in. This photo isn’t styled or shot on a fancy camera, but the way she had the café curtain resting, unhung and nonchalant, on the drying rack feels so free. While the world is heavy and full of chaos please enjoy this picture of something simple and beautiful.
