Mother’s Day is coming, and this is one of my favourite lines from Motherclown about motherhood. Thank you to my friend and brilliant actor @chala_hunter for breathing life into my character, Catherine. I finished the pickups for the audiobook yesterday and hearing her voice to prompt my lines made me so emotional it was a shock.
I wrote this line in its entirety on the Notes app in my phone when I was walking my dogs, heading for Lake Ontario, and saw an empty stroller box in someone’s recycling.
“Catherine knows intellectually that every mother must love their child as much as she loves her daughter, but she doesn’t fully believe it. Her love is the fiercest. It must be. People wouldn’t survive if they walked around carrying this bomb of love all day, every day.”

Recording the audiobook is always one of my favourite parts, and this time is just… the best. I’m playing the daughter, Elise, and my friend Chala Hunter is playing my mother. I saw Chala in a play before I knew her, and she read my memoir before we met, and then, years later, we became dear friends, respect and admiration for each other’s work in the background. Chala did an early read of MOTHERCLOWN and gave me such helpful feedback, and then, when it was time to cast, I realized it was her voice in my head. What an honour to do a “two on the floor” recording with her today, all our dialogue in the novel live in the room with each other. There were moments we were both in tears and had to pause. I feel so earnestly in love with the process! 🤡❤️ thanks to director @alisondeon , producer @heyitssones and sound engineer Matt. (This video, single take, no edits, what a PRO.)
