Fans often ask whether Tobe and Gunnar were careful while shooting the meat-hook scene. In a word, very! In photo 2, you can just barely see that it's director Tobe Hooper (probably chewing on his stogie), close in, always out of camera range, glued to the scene, watching every moment, guiding the steel ring so that it goes over the hook, not into my back, when Gunnar drops me on the hook. Poor Leatherface, beautifully played by Gunnar, spent a lot of those couple of days filming, lifting me... in that godawful heat, no AC, no fans, nothing. Much sweating did occur LOL, but we got 'er done!
In photos 2 & 9, top left, you see our cinematographer, Danny Pearl, above, balancing on a ladder with his camera, and our ADP, Lou Perryman, supporting Danny and the camera. In the following photos, that's Bill Vail, post his terrific death scene, who, as most everyone on Planet Earth knows as 'Kirk', Pam's handsome boyfriend/fiancรฉ. ๏ฟผI couldn't have asked for a better scene partner, easy to work with, calm, cool, thoughtful, kind, and generous.
It's true that first thing, while the crew was busy setting up or we were waiting for clouds to pass, Bill and I got to work forming our background story. We had fun forming our characters. It helped us with our intention in our scenes, playing off one another. We decided we were very much in love, definitely engaged, maybe even secretly married, hence, as August 18, 1973, grinds on, you'll notice Pam is wearing the ring on her left hand.๐คญ๐ค๐คซ
