“Trapped in the Cabin” aka “The Whispering Woods”⁠ ⁠ A year ago we shot this challenging film up in the mountain town of Frazier Park.⁠ ⁠ IT WAS SO COLD!⁠ ⁠ Aesthetically, Director @dereksulek and I wanted a very sharp and clean look. The Sony FX9 with Sigma Cine primes delivered. The lenses were incredibly clean, even at our shooting stop of T2/2.8. I owe 1st AC Bryce Souriall @groovymun for sticking with me through some of the most impossibly difficult focus pulling I could have thrown at him.⁠ ⁠ We had to deal with a snowstorm in the middle of production. While this created continuity issues, it did provide a beautiful scenic backdrop for our exteriors. This was my first experience shooting exterior nights with snow on the ground and it was particularly challenging to keep that “dark” feeling while still having enough light to see all the details we needed. The FX9’s remarkably clean high base made this possible on our tight budget and schedule.⁠ ⁠ Colorist @Coopershine at @Sugarstudiosla tied all the imagery together with an awesome take on the Kodak 2383 print LUT.⁠ ⁠ #SonyFX9 #Sigmacine #davinciresolve #cinematography

“Chaos on the Farm” This feature was shot with an incredibly ambitious schedule. Director @dereksulek and I spent days discusing the blocking in preproduction. We would literally place small figures representing the actors and the camera on a bluprint for nearly every scene and talk about all the possibilities. This saved so much time for him and I on set, allowing him to be with the actors more, and allowing me more time to finesse the lighting. The last two images are of the final sequence of the film with Jessica and Sam on the front stairs. In the scene, the sun was supposed to rise about 2/3 of the way through. We shot the wide master as the sun was setting, and again after the sun had set with just sky light. Once in coverage, were close enough to bring in a few 1K tungsten par lights to be our fake sunlight, while the light left in the sky gave us some great cool fill light. “The Walls are Watching” - Thanks so much to the awesome team at @fadetoblackfilms.la for bringing me on to this feature and for pairing me with the amazing @brianherzlinger We had a few fun challenges on this one 😅 Thanks so much to my team as always for having my back, especially in the basement/crawlspace sequences! One of the most difficult lighting gags we had to create was a revolving light pattern that was supposed to be coming from a child’s night light. The catch was we had to see the effect in a wide shot, and the light had to be coming from the center of this 8’x10’ room. We ended up accomplishing the effect by using two gelled 1K fresnel lights with the lenses removed (open eye for the sharpest shadows possible). The lights were mounted in the ceiling and shined straight down into what was essentially a rotating disco ball with the custom star, sun, and moon shaped mirrors. The “disco ball” was then replaced with the real prop lamp in visual effects to finalize the effect. Ideally I would have loved to add two more 1ks in the ceiling to double the light shapes on the walls. #reddigitalcinema #shotonred #zeisscameralenses #zeisssuperspeeds #davinciresolve #cinematography

Quarantined but still finding ways to be creative. Swipe to see the setup, the color grading steps, and a detail crop. I like to denoise almost everything I shoot on the A7sii as I find the noise unpleasant. I do always go back in at the end of the color grade and add grain as well as color with filmconvert to bring some textural life back into the image. 'Memphis Mood' I decided to shoot this little piece with @marcella_bianca to try to capture some of the strange feelings I felt while being cooped up in a hotel room for 2 months. Recently did a job in NYC but had some free time to shoot some of my own stuff! Met some really cool people!⁠ ⁠ No lighting diagrams on this one so I figured that I could detail a bit of my color grading process specific to these shots. This was one of my more complex grades as I chose to color my A7s sony footage in an Arri LogC /Arri wide gamut color space. Learned this method from @juanmelara . He has some excellent resolve tutorials on YouTube.
