As a child, my aunt would make me pork chop, eggs and garlic rice for breakfast. And it was the best thing I ever ate, mainly because she’d get the pork fresh from Divisoria earlier that morning. It was the market that my titas and mom talked about, but I was never allowed to come. They said, “It’s too crowded. It smells. You’re American. You won’t like it.”
Finally, I got the chance to see it on a tour of Manila. Like open air markets in other countries, it’s bustling, a little chaotic and crowded. It was great. And you can’t beat the turon and lumpia made fresh in front of you. 😋

A belated birthday trip to the motherland to ring in my 40th. And while I enjoy a solo adventure, spending it with these humans made it more special. We learned, explored and feasted. Sharing my culture with them and seeing their full embrace of it fills my soul. This is a trip I’ll never forget.
