Next in our #Centroid30 series, and in celebration of the release of Directive 8020 this week, we’re looking back at one of our first collaborations with Supermassive Games: Until Dawn. Shot at Pinewood Studios starting in 2010, we began working with Director Will Byles and Supermassive under the game’s original concept for the PS3 as a first-person PlayStation Move title. However, for its release on the PS4, the game was overhauled and reshot as a third-person interactive horror experience inspired by classic cinematic horror films such as Psycho, The Exorcist and Halloween. Capturing most of the body performance work, with key cast facial performances captured stateside by 3Lateral and Cubicmotion, we continued working on the game under its new guise at Shepperton Studios, completing capture in early 2015. Leaning on our expertise in quadruped capture, alongside the human performers we also captured Saxon the dog for the role of Wolfie; a dog actor who famously bit Joffrey’s arm in Season 1 of Game of Thrones. Fifteen years on from those early shoots at Pinewood, we’re proud to still be collaborating with Supermassive Games on ambitious cinematic storytelling experiences. Watch this behind-the-scenes feature from the game and see how it all came together. #centroidmotioncapture #mocap #gamedev #untildawn

This Sunday is National Children’s Day and we wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the incredible child performers we’ve worked with over the years, and the extra care, safeguarding, and flexibility that is required with performance capture for younger actors. Working with under 18’s is a balance between getting great performances and making sure the experience stays fun, safe, and manageable for them. On Pinocchio, we worked with more than 23 child performers in a day, which was a careful balancing act of working hours, chaperones and excitable chaos. Mocap suits and HMCs can get uncomfortable pretty quickly, especially during long days, so using adult doubles where it makes sense helps avoid exhausting younger performers while keeping productions moving efficiently and within child working regulations. At the end of the day, you want the performances to feel authentic without losing the magic of being a kid in the process. Have a Happy National Children’s Day! #centroidmotioncapture #pcap #mocap #vfx #nationalchildrensday

Before real-time engines and before virtual production became standard. There was What’s Your News? (2009). For #Centroid30, this is one of the projects that genuinely moved things forward. Capturing the first season in 2007 at Shepperton Studios, we worked with TT Animation to deliver performance capture on a show that combined motion capture, puppetry and live action into a single pipeline. The production brought together leading talent, from Henson and Spitting Image performers like @brian_hezza , @lynnrb3 and @williamtoddjones , to creative leadership from Jocelyn Stevenson, then Chair of the BAFTA Children’s Committee, @chrisdickerart and Jon Burton co-founders of TT Animation, and director @robtygner . This was supported by technical innovation from @mantisrobot , who later built Star Wars’ BB8. The result was an early proof point that game tech driven production had a place in broadcast TV, years before the industry caught up. For Centroid, it also changed the trajectory of the company. We were acquired by TT Games to complete work on the show becoming TT Centroid; and built relationships that kept pushing us to grow into the powerhouse company we are today. #centroidmotioncapture #tbt #Animation #puppetry

Happy International Dance Day! We’ve been lucky to work with some seriously talented dancers over the years, from classically trained performers to contemporary artists, each bringing their own style and detail to the work. We’ve captured everything from backing dancers for Pixie Lott, to concert goers in Bohemian Rhapsody, to dance focused games like all four Zumba games on Nintendo Wii, and it always comes back to the people in the volume and what they bring to it. Dancers we applaud you 👏 #centroidmotioncapture #mocap #motioncapture #dance #internationaldanceday

Centroid, what were you like in the 90s? Back then we had no custom made velcro friendly suits like the ones used today, each marker had to be glued by hand and the markers were a hard plastic 2-inch sphere that you definitely wouldn’t want to fall over in! Who remembers wearing these, or having to work with them? For this shoot, we were casting an up and coming presenter to create a digital human presenter for broadcast. This was an Endemol production with VTR at the helm of content creation and included the now well known @edibow , @emmab_radio and @nemonemetaxas . For those of you old enough to remember Terrorvision, their lead singer @terrorvision_tone was their star guest to interview. It never made it to air. The tech wasn’t quite there. But of course, the execution is on a different level now. #CentroidMotionCapture #90s #vfx #Mocap #centroid30

The fourth in our Centroid30 series, looking back at past projects as we mark our 30th anniversary. Back in 2004, we collaborated with the renowned Brian and Wendy Froud, alongside puppeteers Rob Tygner and William Todd-Jones, to develop a full performance pipeline combining motion capture and live puppetry. What made it work was the sync between Rob handling voice, mechanical facial work and finger puppetry, while Todd drove the body through motion capture. The project became early R&D for our work on What’s Your News?, and helped establish a way of working with artists and puppeteers that continues to this day. We’re still working in that space now, with members of the Centroid team heading to Paris later this year for an exhibition following a recent collaboration with a renowned contemporary artist. Founded in 1996, projects like this reflect the depth of experience we bring to performance capture, and how that continues to inform our work today.
