Fires stoked by Centre faculty and students more than three decades ago were rekindled this month in Danville. A historic wood-fired kiln was put into service after years of disuse, and a recent and extensive restoration effort led by local artists and volunteers, coordinated by the Art Center of the Bluegrass.
The anagama kiln is a traditional Japanese-style wood-fired kiln that seasons hundreds of ceramic creations during a labor-intensive firing process that requires constant, round-the-clock attention throughout a week-long session. The kiln was originally constructed in 1993 by Mack Jackson, Centre art professor Stephen Rolfe Powell ‘74 and Centre College students. Published reports say fewer than 100 anagama kilns are believed to be in operation across the United States.
Centre students were again feeding the “dragon kiln” with senior art major Luke Napier capturing these photos of Reeve Vandemark, Emma Roessler and Riley Parker during one late-night session.
